I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but it's the only one that seemed to cover the topic.

We have a fairly busy site for a geographic region and I don't think we're generating the kind of revenue one would expect. Our current advertising business model relys on Adsense, banners and a manual business index. I really believe creating an automated PPC business index will be better for us and our advertising clients.

So I having a minor disagreement with my business partner that goes something like this:

Me: "We should integrate "x" search index software into our site site because it's a better implementation for generating paid link listings than the primary portal application (Joomla)." ("X" is an automated PPC search engine. But requires people to create accounts seperate from their "community" account for blogs, forums, calendar submissions, etc.)

BuisPartner: "No, because adding that will introduce another user administration account into our enduser experience - we only want a single account for all of their activities."

Me: "But if we implement "x" I think the improved interface, tracking and revenue generation features far out weigh your obsession with a single logon account. If someone wants to run a campaign, they will be fine with setting up an account in the new software because it gives them so much more flexibility and control."

I think this obsession with single point of administration is preventing us from implemting a number of revenue generating tools. Thoughts?

Depends what you mean by 'people' - Are your advertisers the same people as your 'end users?', if so, then he has a point; it's hard enough to get people to sign up once, let alone twice.

But if your site is big enough for the business model you propose, do you need to go down such a complicated route?

No, advertisers would be a fractional subset of our total viewer population. And it would be quite likely that an advertiser would not be registered as a member.

I guess my real question has to do with giving advertisers the option to use pay-for-placement marketing. I think that out-weighs the single point of administration argument. Right now our banner based model takes a fair amount of administrative overhead managing the accounts.

In that case, why not test it on part of the site?

So long as advertisers know it's limited, no harm done - and if you offer a 'special rate', some may jump at it.
