Please propose some quick user testing design / experiments for answering the following Google AdSense related questions.

    Background:

    1. Google AdSense is contextual advertising (http://adsense.google.com)

    2. Yahoo News places Google AdSense alike at the end of their web pages. Example: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=1&u=/nm/20040802/tc_nm/tech_apple_jobs_dc

    Questions:

Q1: to what extend we can improve ad click-through rate through improving ads relevancy to the main article content? Note that we do not want to change anything else(such as position and color) but the ads.

Q2: what is the click-through rate and/or can we improve click-through rate by making ads relevant to "More Stories" subject titles or main themes instead of the current main content article title/theme? In the example above, can we do better if not making ads relevant to "Apple CEO Jobs Has Cancer Surgery" (the current main theme) but to "Microsoft Plugs 'Critical' IE Hole" (the last "Main Stories"wink?

Q3: what is the click-through rate or can we improve click-through rate by placing Google AdSense not to the very bottom but at the right empty margin right below "Tech Education"? Can we do better this way? To what degree?

Q4: Furthermore, for ads putting on the right margin space, can we do better if the ads are relevant to nearby concepts in content (such as "Finding Nemo" or "Apple Powerbook"wink but NOT to the main concepts (such as "cancer surgery" and "Apple CEO Jobs"wink?

    Welcome comments and suggestions.

    1) From what I understand, Yahoo is using a different technology from AdSense. The technology they are using targets the "meat" of a page, eliminating the navigation. While this might seem better from a targeting point of view, it also can be a detriment. It takes more setup and is less fluid in it's spidering.

    2) Everyone's clickthrough rate with AdSense will vary with their own content, placement, etc. I'd guess that the vast majority are experiencing CTR btween 1% and 5%, but I could be wrong. You probably could increase the CTR through what you are saying, but the catch is that you'd have to have advertisers that had the matching content you are looking for. While google has quite a few individual advertisers, the majority of them wouldn't be putting up ads that look like news articles; they are trying to sell a product or service.

    3) The main advantage in placing contextual ads at the bottom of an article is that if the reader is "done" with the article & site, they might just be looking for the "next thing" to check out. If a contexual ad is interesting enough, it's likely to get clicked. By moving the ads over to the site, the reader will see them sooner, however they might pass them up in an effort to finish up the article before leaving the page. Your milage may vary - honestly the only way to find out what's going to work best for your site is to try both.

    4) Not really sure, but if you are using AdSense you can't exactly choose your targeting, so it's somewhat of a moot point.
