I keep on going back and forth on how I should divide our budget. I was wondering for the small businesses out there, how much do you set a side for monthly SEO budget? Do you divide that budget between SEO and PPC?

Hi Stephanie, I think the best approach to do is to start off with a good PPC campaign as PPC is for short term traffic, then do SEO on the side (as SEO is long term).

since you said you dont have a big budget i think its better not to get into PPC, and you really dont need a monthly budget for SEO if you get your goal and rank well for your keywords thats enough but SEO can go on since you need to add in content to your web site or do link building and etc....

I agree with animated.

I have yet to run a PPC myself. I not saying they are wrong or bad or anything negative. They can be very useful. But not always needed.

Put your efforts, time, learning & $ into SEO smile

oh no, i disagree with you all oh no

when i hire someone to do work for me (not just SEO, anything), i expect them to be an expert in their field, i do not want to pay for someone who is doing research, trial and error, and learning.

if i have any budget at all, the biggest bang for the buck is always the expert

of course, in the field of SEO, its hard to tell who the exper may be. sad

i never meant that she should use the money to hire some seo n00b if she gots the time and will she can learn in on her own by reading this and other forums, for sure not to hore a seo who claims to much and is gonna end up banning her site.if she ever chooses to hire a SEO she should see their previous work and ask questions of how they achieve it

mj - I am confused and want to clear this up, so we don't confuse steph.

She asked if her limited $ should go towards PPC or SEO or be divided.

I and animated ( if I understood correctly ) said that she should not be concerned with PPC right now. She is in the very beginnings stages of this business. ( from her other posts here on the different forums ) So if she put her $ into PPC but had a "bad" web site or something else that was not SEO friendly, then her PPC $ would have been wasted.

I too did not mean she should pay some black hat seo person. I am encouraging her to learn and do this on her own as much as she can. BUT if she needs a wed designer or SEO, then I am saying to put her budget towards that - for right now.

oh no oh no i am misunderstood too sad

thats what i get for those late night postings

i never ever suggest black hat.

i also agree that ppc is not the way to go on a limited budget.

if she has no budget she needs to learn herself.

i agree with your message

BUT if she needs a wed designer or SEO, then I am saying to put her budget towards that - for right now.

I am saying the same as you except that if there is any budget at all, hire a white hat pro to do it and save the learning curve. I am convinced (and this is just my opinion) that 99% of the people out there cannot learn.

Not a problem - I thought this was probably a misunderstanding. I just wanted to clear it up for Steph sake wink
