Ok so I have designed the layout of my website in Photoshop. Now I have to move it to Dreamweaver so it can be coded and all… but when I move it to Dreamweaver I can’t select each item so I can tell it what I want it to… ie, buttons, tabs, ect. It’s just one “.jpg” and I can’t do a darn thing with it…. Do I have to move each item one at a time to dreamweaver? I just don’t get it…. I feel dumb… HELP!!!! And if this is the case then why can I buy webpage templates for photoshop? Grrrr…..

Thanks!
huh

Sounds like it needs to be sliced. Designing in photoshop creates one giangantic image, that images needs to be sliced into smaller more manageable pieces. I use fireworks and that has a slice tool that lets you specific where to cut and then you export the sliced sections not sure about photoshop.

I can't even think of how to describe this, but I manually "slice" the image.

I do my layout in Photoshop for the sake of being able to move items around on the page until I settle in on a design.

Then I break it down piece by piece and hand code the site in HomeSite. Basically, if images need to be cut to be matched back up in tables, then I grid the tables in photoshop with those drag and drop blue lines, then slice up the image, saving it as the separate pieces, then put it all back together using a table.

For any other images, I just pull the images out one at a time and save them and plug them into the design.

Photoshop 6 has a sister application called Image Ready which has the slice tool as well as web optimisation tools. Not sure about previous versions.

I have used photoshop and DW together but only in as much as I make the background, individual buttons for rollover effects and individual graphics for export to DW. Never done it as one big jpg for slicing though I am sure that is probably what I should be doing.

There are millions (oh, okay quite a few) websites with Photoshop tutorials which would give you more info on slicing and using Photoshop to design webs, though these days if you do a search for Photoshop web tutorial on Google you may well get a site that discusses selling photographs of spiders in their natural habitat.

They are correct when it comes to having to slice it up. Photoshop has a Image ready built into the program. However do not use the html it produces. It creates garbage code. There are lots of spaccer.gif's and stuff like that. It seems as though you might need some basic html traing. webmonkey.com has pretty good tutorials on basic web design.

again, yep, you need to use photoshop to select each image area individually and copy-merged, ctrl-n, paste to a new image, or use a slicing program such as imageready (with photoshop 6 or 7) or fireworks.

if you have a legal copy of photoshop 7, i'd advise using imageready and learning about over states which are easily created, image names, and dreamweaver table design. try to avoid using tables within tables and look for intelligent ways to "slice" the image (under the extras tools). photoshop guides may help with this as you'll get a decent idea, but tbh, i'm doubting you've bought the program, so should we.....*really* help you? what goes around comes back around again - if you had a legal copy of photoshop you'd be intelligent enough (or charge enough) to pay to learn or have someone help.

otherwise, try the "Jump to..." command wink create slice sections, decide on the file format and export quality, add rollover states and take the time to name stuff properly, then slice. then be prepared for a lot of dreamweaver fiddling.

You can also create slices in Photoshop itself depending on the version (I use 7.0). I don't think this way is as user friendly but you can do it this way if you don't have another program. The best way to describe 'how to' is to check out the Photoshop user guide which should be installed with your software. smile

What I do, is create the image in Photoshop in layers with up & down nav etc.. Then save the up image and save the down image as a separate as well. Open the up image in fireworks now create a new frame and insert the down image to frame 2. Slice it up and set the links and mouseovers etc... spit out the code and mop it up by hand.
