My main domain is ranking well. The problem was the domain name is too long and people could not spell it. So I registered another domain name easy to spell that would redirect users to the site. Fine. Right Wrong? Is it looked at as a door way?

Domain 1 with 1 page pointing to domain 2 full domain with all the pages. Domain 1 is not a key word grabber or a catch for search engines it was simply a redirect page for users that cant spell.

    PROBLEM THAT I JUST FOUND...
This redirection site is on my local workstation at home. I have like a static ip so I am thinking no problem. RIGHT? I then do something dumb. Above the root of the redirection page I moved my development environment folder that mirrors the production site. This is where I do development changes before I move them into production. Now some how google found my development environment and has listed it in some of the data centers but not the main google yet. This means that my site comes up as the first 4 listed. 2 on production and on 2 on my development box. EEEKKkkk. Will I get busted for having a mirror site listed? When I saw this I went to my dev box and used robots.txt

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

Is there anything else I should be doing to stop google from finding my dev area? I think my next step is to stop it being seen on the web with IIS/permissions. The pains of doing before thinking I guess. *SMILE*

My question is will google penalize me for having the redirect page and will it penalize me for the mirror site?

    Thanks

Your answers are no and no. Duplication is a problem search engines have to deal with all the time and is a perfectly normal feature of the web anyway. I'm not sure how in IIS but the trick to smooth site renaming is to always use server level redirects (i.e a 301 permanent redirect).

    no and no GREAT!!
    Thanks chrisridings

I have taken the permissions away from accessing the development area in iis. Now I just hope the search engines have not got too deep. 301 would be best but I would like to keep development to just me. I have done this in corporations but when I get to my own stuff I seem to slip a bit. GRIN

The good news is that my redirection page is going to still be working. Over the months I have read enough in here to scare me strait. After working of months on getting where you want to be it would be a shame to get penalized for doing something innocently.

    Thanks again for your help

    Thanks for the insite
    Mark
