I've heard conflicting stories on how long this new update/filter will be in place with Google. It's hard for me to sit around and do nothing, since my sites are my main source of income. I've already started experimenting, but here is my dilemma.
1. This is similar to the old monthly Google dance. The update should be over this week and the results should return back close to normal. If this is the case I have nothing to worry about.
2. This is a short-term update, wait it out. If this is true how long should I wait before panicking? Does short term mean the end of December? I don't want to start altering all my sites and messing up my rankings on Inktomi if the filter is going to be removed in 2 weeks!
3. This is a long-term filter that may be in place for a few months before it is changed/updated. If this is the case I need to start experimenting with all my sites now!
What does everyone think?

I'm afraid that the only people who can answer that question are Google staff and it's probably not a good idea to hold your breath waiting.
I'm seeing plenty of changes being made in the listings and clearly some activity and tweaking going on. However, the results still seem to be as weak as ever with a succession of bad lists emerging. My hope is that Google rolls back the clock to the last good algorithm and chalks this one up to experience.

just my two cents, but I think it is somewhere in between. Unfortunately, i think 'some' of this will stick regarding changes. In particular the new 'stemming' cannot be ignored and I think it is unlikely that they will reverse tracks with that.
At the same time, I'm still waiting for things to change further before taking drastic new approaches or finalizing any analysis. While there has been 'some' slight shifting the index has been fairly stable since Nov 15. Two weeks into it, i'm not suprised things are pretty much the same. When I start to see shifting for my sites and others - i will return to interpreting and considering adjusting my overall approach. Until then, I continue to press forward in much the same direction as before. I'd give it a couple more weeks at least, but expect there to be significant permanent changes that must be factored into future optimization.

My advice would be to start working on Inktomi. I'm sure Yahoo is getting ready to drop google. If memory serves me correctly Ink was always a search engine that could be easily tailored to meet the needs of the client who is purchasing it's use. Seems to me Yahoo would tailor it to boost sites in it's directory. That way their directory submissions would return. Relevancy was the reason why they moved to Google from directory listing in their search. Now they can have their cake and eat it too. Might be a good time to start submitting to the yahoo directory. The price is bound to go up after this takes effect.
