I hear rumor that the next index will see a return to normal for Google. Anyone else out there hearing such rumors?

I highly doubt it. Google made such big changes with the Florida update that they will most likely not go back to the old index (which some might be calling "normal" .
However, they will constantly be tweaking this current algorithm to give better results than they're currently giving. So, if you can call that "normal" than that's most likely what they will be doing.

Giant SE like Google, they are most likely not going back to the old things if they did changed something. I agree with bhartzer, they are constantly tweaking the current algorithm to give better search results.
Thing is going to be changed after the next update. I'm not sure if it is bad, good, or better for us. We'll see

Why wait and see? I'm thinking you are waiting as things are moving forward.
Florida is/was not a typical update in the old sense of what we used to term a dance. It was a universal algo change with the introduction of new factors (i.e. stemming).
You may not see a next update
I've been moving forward with seo changes, new site, site redos and I'm seeing the process back to a flowing continuous update. New sites rank, shift around, settle in ... see green bar - revisted - rankings update. This is for new and existing sites - and rankings are in google, steady as can be.
It is continuous updates as the norm for awhile imo - get to work with google (i.e. content is king mantra) - and watch for shifts at yahoo and msn in the coming weeks instead.

Logan - when you say moving forward with redos ... what sorts of changes are you making? I've picked up very little from conversations over the past few months that would indicate which changes should be made to optimize for post-Florida Google.
Thanks.

a lot of times it is redoing graphic menus to text navigation. Based on my experience some text is always better than graphic images when it comes to seo. I do incorporate keywords within internal links - but I (try) to keep it natural. Other scenarios include change linking/navigation structure adding sitemap or breaking down long pages into content category type pages so it is search specific. More keywords = more pages = more google = good. There is always more optimization to be done, imo. I try to base it on referral data and log file analysis plus a lot of keyword research.

In reference to redos, I'm operating under the assumption that our site fell out of site in the search because Google saw us a spam. So I'm trying to take out things that may have been spamish. For instance, I had repeated a word several times in my keywords, ie: indoor widgets, outdoor widgets, fiberglass widgets. I'm thinking that I could have dropped the extra "widgets" on each type. So that's what I did and we're back page 3/4 (changes each search). From the beginning, I've only used legit techniques and only inadvertently "spammed" google. Now I'm making small changes and waiting, see the change in the results, and repeating.

I read somewhere on this board I believe, that someone thought that adding a single page of substantial natural content would be enough to be brought back into the SERPs; that this filter was removing people without much content. Any thoughts as to the viability of that idea? I thought it was one worth checking out. Also, i've done a test to remove my recip links page temporarily from my site to see if recip linking was the issue - that doesn't seem to have any effect.
With regard to making changes - I just noticed that I am rocking in Inktomi right now, so I'm hesitant to make any Google changes, given that Google's significance will undoubtedly diminish in the coming months.
I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed that the rumor is correct and that we'll see positive changes in Google in the near future, so no hard decisions need to be made. I'm not sure I want to set out chasing the unknown, on Google's bidding alone.

"I just noticed that I am rocking in Inktomi right now"
Interesting how that is. i've had the same experience. Here is my theory ... inktomi is almost at a point of being equivelant of google's exact algo pre-florida (think heavy link text pop factor). Now google moved on. Old google, now does great in inktomi. The question is then, did google make the move specifically away from link pop and link text because they had to from a quality standpoint ... which ink may be forced to do also with time. Check your rankings in wisenut, you may rock there as well. Inktomi hopefully should be helpful with yahoo and msn ... soon.

I just went to Inktomi.com-sitemap-WEB SEARCH PARTNERS and found my main site has never done so well. They have changed something thats for sure. I noticed that my dynamic db content was also picked up just like in google. I am happy to say I am doing much better. I have watched this for 2 years and done minor changes to my site in the last year. The links in the search partners area showed me some searches I had not seen before that I ranked well in.
