I sell watches online and I have been acquiring highly targeted links to my site, often the link is relevent to one of my products, but goes to the main page because of the nature...Most of my pages are a PR3 only, and have no links pointing to them other than my own built in directory...should I be pointing these links to a more specified page?
Also, if I have gone from 2-3 low level links now, to 2-3 PR5, 5-10 PR3, and ~10 PR1 ( low level ) links, to a PR3 page, what are your guesses for new PR on the update ? ( I'll post the exact change when it happens smile )
BTW, it is a major pain to find links in this market, and it is probably not worth my time, but I do it in my free time so don't post telling me not to focus on PR, I am already addicted...

ltcobretti, it really is difficult to find good links in certain industries. It sounds like you've managed to get quite a few good links, though. This will definitely help, as we really don't know how much weight Google will be giving to links that are from sites that are on-theme. It is my opinion that they will eventually get to a point where they start to discount off-topic links (if not ignore them totally), but I don't think we're there yet.

So, I would say that they next step is to concentrate on getting at least a few links from sites that have a higher PR than your site. This would include directories, local sites that are perhaps located in your local city or state (there are a lot of local portals out there), and maybe just a few places that you can find that will link to you. Another way to find links is to analyze the links of your competitors--or those pages that have high rankings in your topic area.

Also, another way is to contact people you talk to on these forums and ask to trade links. You never know.

bhartzer, I agree, I think links that the software finds to be unrelated will eventually be worth nothing...if they aren't already...I am not a believer in the "get higher PR's than yours" however...I think that every link helps, and if you have a higher ranked site, you are expected to be linking to other sites, and all cannot be as high as yours...The real question is: if you are out looking for links, should they be to your main page, or the more specific page ? ? ? Do you want to branch down, or branch efficiently ? ? ? You know ?

I think it often can be smart to link to specific pages within your site. Especially if you have a good navigation system. Then the PR you get to whatever page will flow through the whole site.
Also remember; if you get high PR on your index page the next pages often gets one point lower. Then, as you reach a 5 or 6 at the index - it's gonna be hard to increase it any further. So why not go for a 5 or 6 on your sub-pages too? (by externally linking to them)

- And one more thing: If Google sees that also external links to sub-pages are coming in, I think he will concider the whole site as more important, and maybe give the index page a boost in ranking... (just a theory that suddenly came to my head).

Am I way off? Or do you guys think I'm on to something (thinking about the last theory)

Does anyone have any ideas about that?

- External links to sub-pages... Do you think it somehow can boost the ranking of the site? Not because of Page Rank, not because of mor inbound links, but simply because there are links to other pages within the site...

I thought maybe Google then will realize that there are lots of relevant stuff at the site since people will link directly to sub-pages because they're on-topic..

An example: at a site like download.com there are lots of inbound links to sub-pages! Will that increasing the index-page ranking in Google?

The PR boost is divided among the outbound links on the page that are linking to your site - so you get more of a boost if yours is the only outbound link, less of a boost if yours is one of 10 or 20.

The best that you could expect is a number equal to your highest ranked inbound link(5), but that probably won't happen. A PR of 4 or less is more likely. Since you have multiple 5's, you probably will end up with a 4. The home page (or landing page) will be updated with the next update. Other pages in your site will take a follow up update to get updated.

PR is a dying entity. I am sure Google will do away with it eventually or at least find a way to make it fair. That is why the PR update isn't happening. Good luck to everyone! I say; get as many links as possible. Doesn't matter where, PR, themed or not themed. Links are links in my book. They will all add up anyway. Everyone should take their focus away from google for a long while...IMHO
