Hello,
Has anyone had a site banned for running an automated rank-chcking report??
For example, I would use TopDog to run periodic rank reports to find my movements so adjustments can be made to the content.
One of my sites I used to run weekly reports has simply dissapeared, nowhere to be found in the first 200 pages. ( I used to be in the top 10 at least twice ) I have never employed anything that violates their rules.
Any ideas fellas?

If you're program or service uses a Google API key, then no you should not be banned. Wait it out and see if it comes back, they usually do.

if it was that easy.... then just check ranks on all of your hardest competitors...
Don't think they do that

If you use an automated mechanism to query Google in any way that does not use the Google API then they will ban you.
They don't ban the url that you're checking, they ban the IP address that is hitting their server so hard with the repeated requests.

To emphasize "they don't ban the url that you're checking, they ban the IP address that is hitting their server".

But running auto software does violate their "rules".. so just take them out of your topdog run and check them manually or as others have said us only tools that use API.. it will not give an accurate reading, but is an approximate... all that is left after that is manual checking.

I don't understand about being banned for checking your rankings...I do that every day with Google dance tool and other little tools I have found here???
What is API? I didn't think I was banned because my page is still in the index but nowhere to be found under relavant keywords... Maybe I'm semi-banned?
How can they connect an IP address to your website domain????

Can someone tell me what API stands for and how can you get banned for checking your site rankings?

The Google API is a way to make programatic queries to Google without violating their terms of service. There are free rank checking systems out there that use the Google API. we have one for example, which you can read about in this thread:

What if I was using automatic submission software such as AddWeb, would Google ban or penalize my IP, or does it have no effect?

You don't need to submit your site to Google (they prefer to find sites by following links and include them on their own) but if you do it should be manually, you can do that as often as you like.
Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our terms of service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.
From:Google's Guidelines for Webmasters
Fiction: Automated "ranking checking" programs are a good way for webmasters to save time and measure their "online presence."
Fact: Automated "ranking checking" programs violate Google's terms of service. They use server resources that should be spent on answering user requests. We strongly request that you not use rank checking programs to check your position on Google.

Thanks for that Excell. I don't avtually use the submission programs myself, I just wait for Google to crawl my site using links, but was just wondering what would happen.

Most folks that run submissions via tools like addweb/toptog/webposition etc.. just simply de-select Google (and whatever else they don't want to autosubmit to) when they are setting up the engines for their submission run.
