Can anyone tell me how much difference it would make between optimizing a home page version a page one level down?

Say I have a site that cover 3 different key areas. They all go on the home page, and then each topic has it's own page.

Would I be better optimizing the home page to cover one of the topics?

For instance, if I had 2 pages, identical in all respects, one is the home page and the other is further down the chain, how much difference does it make.

    Cheers, Gay

Typically, the home page gets a little boost of importance. One thing you might think about if the 3 key areas can stand on their own is the use of a subdomain, like this: topic1.mydomain.com, topic2.mydomain.com, topic3.mydomain.com.

    Thanks d_stew

That's a good idea (when my poor brain stops spinning from all this new stuff I'm learning)

Are there any disadvantages to that?

I would optimize interior pages before creating sub-domains. The problem with sub-domains is that act as an entirely new domain which means you have to build the popularity of the new domain from the ground up. If you optimize interior pages you at least have the benefit of working from an established URL.

The home page is usually the first page I would optimize but it does not hurt to optimize interior pages for their respective keywords after that.

    Thanks Stony

I think you're right. It's a useful idea though as I want to offer people a one page option and I think a subdomain would be good for this eg www.fredbloggs.portraitcorner.co.uk

Well yes, I've heard it before and sometimes it causes problems especially with spam - learnt early on not to use it in my email address.

I'm a 52 year old married female and it's what my Mom christened me.

I went through a phase where I didn't use it as a name in forums etc. Then I thought stuff it, if people think I'm a gay male and don't like it, that's their problem.

So I show a little moral support for the people that are gay and their right to be exactly who they are.

Now I'd bettter shut up ot I'll get banned for being off topic and I don't think I'd be allowed to yell 'discrimination!' smile
