So, we all know that Google is using DMOZ for their site directory, but how much influence does that [snipped] directory have on a Google listing? It seems silly that Google would use such an inefficient directory as a basis for weighing results, but apparently it does figure into the algo somehow.
I have been a DMOZ editor since 1999, but I pretty much gave it up a couple of years ago because I just didn't have time to manage all my directories. I'm guessing that 90% of the other editors have moved onto other things too because I can't get any legitimate sites listed to save my life.
Any thoughts on the Google/DMOZ connection and how to shake things up and get listed in DMOZ these days?

All you can do is submit the sites to the most relevant category and wait.
Google uses so many different criteria to place a site with-in it's results that dmoz is one little piece of the puzzle.

I've submitted my sites into the proper categories multiple times in the past 3 years to no avail. I'm just guessing nobody is home at those editor spots...
It is one piece, but it seems to be a pretty stale piece if anything. It is a fraction of what Google bases their algo upon, but that fraction could make a slight difference... it just sucks that nobody is home.

If nobody is home, who is adding the thousands of new listings that appear per week?

Well... I guess I should say that nobody appears to be home in the category I'm suggesting into:
http://dmoz.org/Business/Business_Services/ Event_Planning_and_Production/ Convention_and_Trade_Show_Services/Registration_Services/
Like I said, I used to be an editor, so I'm following the rules to a "T" to make his/her life easier... I've done it 4-5 times over the past 3 years to no avail. That's why I say that nobody is home.
But, if other categories are growing, then I mistake... sorry to say all of DMOZ is asleep.
Hopefully it gets included and hopefully that helps our Google placement--even if just a teeny tiny bit.
PS... one of the other things that frustrates me is that the sumission forms to suggest a URL time out about 50% of the time, and so does the search feature. :-/

Peace_and_Powder, try to email one of the editors of the containing category http://dmoz.org/Business/ and see what happens.

You would be better off asking for a status report at Resource Zone.
By the way, the suggestion guidlines say to submit once. You say you submitted multiple times. Maybe you tripped the tolerance level of spamming there?

Also, when you resubmit, you overwrite your previous application. This puts you back at the end of the line.

When I've said I've submitted more than once, it's like twice per year. I've waited at least 5-6 months between submissions. I figure that shoud be more than enough time for an editor to look at a listing and not be considered spam.
What do you guys think?

What fourstardragon said is correct. By resubmitting, you took yourself out of the line and put yourself right at the end of it.
As g1smd suggested, ask for a status report at Resource Zone. Even if they tell you to ask again in a year, it's better than losing your place in line.
From the Resource Zone FAQs:
"How long should I wait before I resubmit?
The simple answer is "forever".
The ODP submission guidelines used to say to do it every month, but this has been rendered unnecessary by changes in how the ODP works. Once a submission has been received, it will never go away. It will sit in that category, awaiting review. Submissions do not expire.
So the preferred method is now to suggest the site to the category and wait at least a month. If, after a month, the site has not appeared, then come to Resource Zone and check that the site submission was successful (some do get lost). If an editor tells you to resubmit, then please do. Once an editor has confirmed that the submission is awaiting editorial review, then submitting again will do no good.
In fact, a new submission to the same category overwrites the previous one. Editors have many ways of sorting the pool of unreviewed sites in a category and one of them is by submission date. If this is the case, then a resubmission will show up further down the list and may end up taking longer to get reviewed."

Hmmm... I guess the rules have changed since I was last familiar with them. I'm going to have to get ahold of another guide as well that's over that category. It just seems ridiculous that I've submitted it over 2 years ago and still nothing. This category is competitive, but there can't be an insurmountable amount of submissions...
Anyway... wish me luck. Thanks for the help!

You would have thought with all the money google have they'd have their own directory. People say dmoz is only a fraction of the end results, but its a pretty large fraction. I've seen some sites appear for about 2 or 3 weeks, and they get almost instant regognition. On top of that you end up getting quite a lot of link backs from people using ODP data including all those naff links that just take you to another search engine results page. Being in ODP increases weight and increases link popularity quite quickly.
