I have a PR 5 site that I also used to debut new sites. I'll link to the new site and new site will always debut with a PR4 and show my PR5 site as a backlink. Today though I notice that a new site of mine has a PR of 3 and does not show the backlink from my PR 5 site. What confused me is, how did it find the site except via my link? And since it found it from my link, why doesn't it show it as a backlink?

Any help would be appreciated - thanks....

Google finds urls in different ways, not just through links. They won't reveal how they find new urls, but there's probably a lot of ways. I would bet that you probably have the Google Toolbar installed and visited your new site.

As for backlinks, Google just doesn't show all backlinks, so it might not ever show as a backlink. To check backlinks, you might try Yahoo! which tends to show a lot more backlinks than Google does. In Yahoo!, use this search:
    link:http://www.yourdomain.com
