It looks like Google did quiet a big update over the last couple of days. Many of my sites and client sites moved up/down and dissappeared for a while during this but are now doing fine, some better than before.
I also noticed that some of my website pages have started showing no Google PR. They always had PR before but certain pages on good ranking sites have now got a grey box on the Google toolbar.... anybody have a clue about why this happens?

google does updates all the time.. at least once a week.

I know that Google does continuous updates, but this one seemed to have a bigger ripple than normal.
The other issue of old pages loosing all Google PR and only showing Grey on the Google tool bar is also strange...

Actually, Google updates almost 'on the fly' - it's pretty much a continuous performance these days. New pages can appear within minutes of being FTP'd
Plus there are many datacenters, which can show different results (intentionally - Google tweaks are always being trialled here and there).
The 'green bar' page rank is, of course, several months out of date, and means little. But a change in the little green bar may be important.
It may signify that a general 'PR update' is taking place; when that happens, for some sites, PR goes all over the place before settling down to a new (or old!) level. THOSE updates occur every three to four months, and I don't think we're expecting one about now (are we?).
It may suggest that you have a severe duplicate content issue, and those pages are being shuffled below alternative versions.
It may be that you have a Google ban spreading across the site. Check by searching fro unique content from the affected pages, and via Google Webmaster Tools.
There may also be other possibilities, which are less likely, and we'd not know without exploring the site.

Sorry, missed a key issue:
If the site is new - or has been substantially rebuilt - then individual pages may experience frequent, unpredictable and inexplicable changes in PR, conceivably for months. Careful planning can almost always prevent this problem.

while google DOES update constantly i have noticed periodic major reshuffles in the past year every few months.

I think it's the difference between updating the index with new sites and changes - and bigger changes when they tweak the algo - smaller algo changes probably pass largely unnoticed, except for the people directly affected.
