Hi guys,
Two of my friends and myself have developped a cool project which will be done like a week, and I'd like it to go viral.
Its caracteristics are:
- It is a unifying project,
- It is fun and addictive,
- It just needs a boost and then it will take care of itself.
I'm actually finishing the coding of this site.
Problem is, how do you make optimization when the content is posted by the public?
FIY the site is jinxed.org
People posting their stories, people voting... You get the point.
That's why I need to know how to optimize this site, knowing I have little control of the actual content.
Help welcome!

what did you use to build it? CMS? Which one?
if you totally created the site and the code yourself, you'll have to do this also.
I work for a social networking development company, as a general rule, social networks do not get their members from search engines. They get their members by word of mouth.
if search engines are what your thinking is going to drive you membership program and is a major factor of your marketing plan, you may have some rethinking to do.
Have you ever joined a social network because you found it on a search engine?
now, that said, you should make your site indexable by the SE"s. its getting the pages ranked that is the problem. Even if you give the content creators a way to enter, meta tags, titles, and format the page correctly, they don't know how to use those opportunities. YOu also will need to have some time of URL rewriting to optimize the pages for the SE's.
If you did build using a CMS, most have some type of SEO/SEF component that can be installed, but even they have their limitations if not used correctly.

If you are looking for getting your site on top in Search engines then you will have to concentrate on SEO [ Onpage and Offpage ] Tag are most important in SEO, Use your keywords in title and meta tags wisely. try to use targeted keywords within content of your website. If you want you can rewrite title of posts of your visitors using some important keywords

harrysmith, his issue is that this is a dynamically generated social network with user generated content.
all of those principles will not work for him.

I cannot see how you can optimise that site in the format that its in. Each page is totally random and too diverse to capitalise on ANY terms contained within the copy.
I'd set up a template or additional pages around the posts, and optimise that for your main terms such as 'funny stories', ie optimise for four or five main terms within the site structure itself and leave the rest to chance.
Or, set up category pages for the posts, and optimise the category templates accordingly.
The site is a nice idea, but if you're looking for a lot of search engine referrals then i dont think your structure is currently up to it, and needs more work.
