If I remember correctly then Google states that PageRank will have no effect on the traffic they send to a site. I might be remembering wrongly or it might just be so. So before I start spending nights on getting backlinks, what do you guys think about this? Will a high PR improve traffic? (like 6 or 7) - I'm currently at 5 (down from 6)

in and of itself it will not effect traffic, it theoretically will effect rank position and that in return should increase traffic, but it isn't pr that you want to chase, its conversion that you want.
higher rank sites may get more hits, but well designed sites that get their massage across to its visitors gets a higher conversion.
PR is just a small piece of the formula and is not as important as it once was.

1 - don't chase page rank - the data you see in the bar is old anyway.
2 - do continue to look for quality inbound links. They bring not only traffic, but increase the value of your site as seen by the engines. If a quality site is willing to link to you, you must be worth ranking better - that sort of thinking.
3 - don't chase page rank...oh, wait, I said that...
4 - don't SWEAT page rank - it's not a metric. Stick to tracking results by watching your stats for increased visits, increased page views, and as mentioned, conversion trump all.
