True. The problem starts when people try to merge JS with server side scripting.

Likewise, MSIE +5.5 if I have the energy, Mozilla, Opera
Personally I always keep JS client side, however often have the js constructed using PHP or ASP, passing arrays etc, however more recently I've started pulling in XML with JS, makes for extreme functionality, just about to rerelease my personal site this way, I'll post it back under site reviews when done lol

does anyone have any idea how I could make something like this work for wordpress - the problem seems to be the way they call their css file - it is always style.css as default and changing the name seems to break the system. Taking this out and replacing with either examples you posted above into the header.php file just renders the pages without any style sheets!!!
Any ideas - I'm more a designer than a coder, so the problem is beyond my basic html hacking skill set.

There are 2 ways to make changes to the WordPress. The templates can be directly edited/modified and uploaded back to their original directories taking care to maintain the same file name. You need to be familiar with PHP of course.
The second - more popular method is to use the Theme editor from the Dashboard - > Design - > Theme Editor and edit the Theme files listed on the right hand side. You can include your own style sheet here in the header.php
But as the css files will be cached, you can include all your CSS rules directly into the standard style.css .
