Amending all my image and css urls to absolute urls is bad practice ( I bet you don't do this yourself) and is not something I intend to do.
Thanks for all the suggestions folks, I am surprised we couldn't find a solution for what seems a relatively straightforward problem. But it's taken up too much of my time and I do not intend to pursue it further.
