Hello all,

I'm wondering if someone can help me with a quick question. I'm sure this is extremely easy, but I can't seem to find any info on it when I do a google search.

We are running some targeted marketing campaigns via email and we want to give users a URL that will tell us which marketing campaign they are responding to by simply using a parameter in the URL.

For example, instead of giving them:
http://mydomain.com/product.html

we would like to give them something like:
http://mydomain.com/product?camp1

so that when they click on it, the server logs the URL parameter, and "camp1" would indicate that it's a response to marketing campaign #1.

However, I don't know what the proper syntax would be to do this. I know it can be done, I just don't know how!

Can anyone help me? Thanks so much in advance! smile

Tracy

Your second example above is "almost" right, but you need to put back in the .html that you dropped from your first example.

http://domain.com/product.html?AnythingYouWant

Your HTML page will completely ignore the parameter in the query string, but your web server will include it in your logs.

Thanks, Ron! smile I goofed on that but the example you gave is what I actually tried, and my logs aren't showing my tests so I thought I had it wrong. I wonder why they aren't showing it...

I'm not sure, Tracy. I just tested it on my server, to be sure, and it worked fine.

What web server are you using? Do you know what your log format is?

And perhaps most relevant, how are you examining your raw log files?

TracyJ - have you considered getting tracking software? I was just suggested to conversiontracker.com but there are others.

Hi Ron,

We're on an NT server; but I don't know what our log format is.

I was wondering whether the stats software we use to interpret the log files was the problem. We use WebTrends, which our web host installs and sets up.

Hi Sirduncan,

I just tried converstiontracker.com but got a "domain not found" message. Hmmm.

We currently are using a stats software package that interprets the server logs, but I don't know that WebTrends is giving us all of the data we'd like. It's pretty robust but perhaps it misses the boat on some things, like my particular problem here. I'll have to check into some others if I can't figure this out!
