Hello all.
A quick question. At the moment I am paying a stupid amount per month for website hosting. My question is : How much should professional webhosting cost ? This will be to host a e-commererce site.
Thanks

well, its 500 pounds sterling per month about $875. For the renting and hosting of two e-commerce packages. I own the content, but the back end and page generating software (dont really know what to call it) is rented. WHen I questioned a recent increase in price I was told the folowing :
'The CENSORED ecommerce operations will move onto their own server in our datacenter – the server is a dual xeon machine with 3Gb of Ram – it is very fast and very robust machine – the current server is one in Canada and the system is shared with other sites. This server will have to be to handle both CENSORED and CENSORED as two separate commerce instances.. The price is normally £1000 per month and includes licenses support, back-up and webstats for both CENSORED and CENSORED businesses.'
Am I getting nailed ?

Sounds expensive to me. Have you looked around for packages with similar features and checked the price of them?

Well, Ive tried, but Im not sure what metrics to use for the comparison. Ive seen them for 20 dollars a month and 50 dollars a month etc. Nothing as high as we are paying though.

Does their description of the service above sound like it would in any way be close to warranting such a price tag ?

Keep your current hosting and buy a new one with similar configuration. Then upload your data on new server and test it. Once you found everything working, move your domain to new host. Keep your current hosting for next 2 months. After 2 months, say good bye to your old (ex-current) host.

Ah, but the fee also includes "renting" an e-commerce package, so they are effectively "locked in" with that supplier...

Im not really locked in, I could always pay them just for the e-commerce and host somewhere else. I just find it hard to find out if I will really end up paying alot less.

Let's start at the very beginning ...
>>How much should professional webhosting cost ?
It all depends a lot on what you need. Shared hosting costs about a 100 US $ for a year - from a decent host. The figures given here are intended for a general guidance only. Many hosts charge a lot more or less.
Dedicated servers start about 150 US $ every month to well over 1000 dollars depending upon the configuration, service, management etc.
>> includes licenses support, back-up and webstats ...
It is standard. You are paying for the physical server, bandwidth and maintenance. Backups and webstats are standard value added service provided by most hosts at no extra cost.
>>dual xeon machine with 3Gb of Ram ...
Again it is not a big deal. Almost all powerful servers are based on dual Xeon CPUs and generous amounts of RAMs.
The bottom line is what is your requirement ?
1. Do you nurse a site with millions of hits every day ?
2. Do you use dynamically generated pages crafted from a large database at the backend ?
3. How critical is this server to your operations ?
4. What is your long term strategy ?
5. Do you have an inhouse web architect or a seasoned webmaster who can evaluate the requirements technically ?
If you can answer the above questions, you may well be on your way.

If pricing was an indicator of what you had, I'd say you had a dedicated, top-of-the-line server with latest features, shopping cart software, load balancing software, and included tech support. Not knowing what you have doesn't make it easy to figure whether or not you are getting a good deal or not.
What needs to be disclosed is:
- Do you have dedicated hosting with the above features listed?
- Or do you have shared hosting?
