I receive weekly reports that tells me how many unique visitors I have had. Up unitl last week the results were pretty good, but last week saw a 26% decrease in the number of unique visitors.
I have checked and the site was working in perfectly good order last week, and I use google adwords, and have submitted my site to many directories so I am really confused about this sudden drop...
any ideas, or anything I should be looking into taht I havent?
thanks

all the information is still vague really.
Have been carrying out any advertising that has stopped?
Have you been dropped from the search engines?
product going out of date?
lack of fresh content?
this is only skimming the surface of why this could of happened

I bid for adwords on google also, and none of the advertising has stopped

Look at the impressions and clicks in your Google account to see if the traffic from your ads has dropped along with the traffic on the site.
Do you have a way to determine where your traffic comes from? If you do, look to see whether all traffic has dropped or only traffic from a particular source.
Depending on what you find I can offer suggestions on how to determine why and what to do about it.

Hi
Thanks for all your replies..
I ahev looked and basically: page impressions have dropped 30%, along with the 26% decrease in unique visitors. However the number of people posting ads to the site has slightly increased..
All advertising methods seem to be in tact

Compare the statistics in your Google Adwords account using the same dates covered by your weekly reports to determine if you're sending less traffic through your ads or the drop in traffic is from some other source.
If all or most of the decrease in traffic is due to fewer clicks on your Google ads compare the time periods when traffic was stronger to when it dropped and see what is different.
Your ads may have dropped in position due to more competition. There could be disapproved keywords or ads or one or more links in ads that are not working. Verify that you don't have any inactive keywords.
If you're only using broad matched keywords add the phrase and exact match versions of all keyword phrases and as many variations of those phrases as you can.
If the amount of traffic from Google has stayed the same your site may have dropped out of the natural search results for one or more high traffic searches or lost a link from a site that was sending you a lot of traffic.

Hello All. Newbie here. New to here anyway. *waves*
Perhaps you exhausted your Adwords budget sooner this month, than last. I have seen in the last month, within some nitches, that many of the higher bidders have moved away from Adwords. I am seeing them over at Yahoo now. I moved some of my publisher sites within some nitches to Yahoo, to capitalize on that as a matter of fact, and doubled my revenue for those sites.
This means many of the lower bidders at Adwords, got more air time, and depleted their budgets sooner. Yes, you may have received the same number of hits for the month, but they were clustered into a tighter time frame, leaving your budget depleted earlier in the month.
You must compare apples to apples. The first Monday to the first Monday, the second Friday to the second Friday, in order to really see trends, and know whether something is amiss or not. You can't just compare this month to last month, and say things are different. But, you can compare this month, to this month last year, and this day of the week in this week of this month, to the same exact days last year. You have to be very careful when looking at stats.
Never compare the 7th of the month to the 7th of the month. One will be a Monday, the other may be a Sunday. That can really throw you off. Traffic flow by day of the week, within a specified season, is the best way to compare traffic. Be sure to make adjustments for spring break, Easter, early warm weather ... things that will modify traffic considerably.

Thanks for the post bosslady. You've made some excellent points. There are definitely trends and external reasons for changes in traffic.
Usually Sunday and Monday are strong sales days but now that the weather is beautiful many places I've seen traffic and sales drop on those two days with a corresponding increase in traffic and sales on weekdays later in the week.
