    Goodmorning,
I am having trouble figuring out in Analytics how to view the ACTUAL keywords/phrases that people search for and we PPC. All of our paid keywords are broad match, so we never know exactly what people are searching for. In IndexTools analytics we can see the actual phrase that the visitor typed into the search engine, but we don't know if it was a paid click or not (because of broad-match). So we got Analytics thinking that Google would tell us the exact search term/phrase that we are paying for. I appologize if this question is too simple, but I've been searching our Analytics account for 2 days trying to figure it out and I am getting frustrated. Please help!
    Thanks,
    Steve

You can see the actual search phrases in IndexTools and if you use manual tracking codes and use those in your PPC settings you can get IndexTools to automatically separate your organic and paid traffic and conversions.

To see the actual search phrase go to Marketing, Campaign Summary, select a campaign, place your mouse over the magnifying glass and click "show search phrases". When you do this the phrases shown are actual search phrases and not the broad match phrase you have in Google.

In Google Analytics select the Marketer view in the Dashboard, click on "Overall Keyword Conversion", and find the Export options above the pie chart. Click on the format you want (I generally use Excel).

That will download all the keywords into a spreadsheet so you can view them and other details about traffic they've generated all at once.

There are no questions that are "too simple". Analytics are so new and we're all still learning. I've been trying to get discussions started so we can all expand our use as they are critical to success.

Here is how I set up IndexTools to provide the data you want.

Select Settings and click on "Set up banners, email and PPC/CPC campaigns" under Campaigns & PPC tracking. Under paid search create or edit a campaign for Google PPC.

I have these settings for Google PPC
    Campaign Type: Paid Search
    Campaign Name: Google PPC
    Decription: Google PPC
Cost Type: Free campaign/Other cost type
    Keyword identifier: kw
    Show Campaign in Reports: Show
Campaign Settings: entry page url contains source=google

I tag all my Google keywords with this format:

    ?source=google&kw=keyword1+keyword2+keyword3

Note that if your url already has one ? you need to change the question mark in the tracking code to an & so it will read &source=google&kw=keyword1+keyword2+keyword3

kw= may have only one keyword or as many words as you have in a keyword phrase.

You can also indicate whether the keyword phrase is broad, phrase, or exact or include additional parameters for campaigns, ads, or other information you wish to track.

I add -br for broad, -ex for exact, -ph for phrase:

    ?source=google&kw=keyword1+keyword2+keyword3-br
    ?source=google&kw=keyword1+keyword2+keyword3-ph
    ?source=google&kw=keyword1+keyword2+keyword3-ex

Note that you must place tracking on all sources for which you wish to see keyword data and the tracking for IndexTools is different than the tracking for Google Analytics.

One advantage to IndexTools is that you specify what to track so you can set it up to use whatever tracking you already have. You can also track traffic from sources you don't have tracking codes on such as a Web site that sends you free traffic but you haven't requested or isn't willing to add tracking from their links to you.

Google Analytics automatically tracks Google ads to the keyword level; however, you must use THEIR SPECIFIC tracking codes to split out traffic from all other sources which means putting most PPC ads elsewhere through editorial review again.

For details on how to get the Google Analytics required tracking codes for other traffic sources go to Google Analytics Sticky Thread.

I am also posting other information on how to use Google Analytics in that thread and encourage discussion from users of Google Analytics in the PPC forum.

Sorry, I don't get this....It shows me all of the keywords, but not whether they are Paid or Organic... Am I doing something wrong?

I need to talk to our programmer to get the IndexTools tags up, but I am not sure if we will, we are on the trial program and we only have 14 days left...

In the Marketer view you can see CPC versus Organic Conversion but it doesn't give a breakdown to the keyword level. I'll see if I can find out if Google Analytics provides that information and if so how to get it.

The IndexTools tags go on the ads themselves so whoever does the PPC would add them. Anyone with Administrator access in your IndexTools account can enter the settings I mentioned above.

If you already have the IndexTools code on your thank you page and it is returning revenue you don't have to do anything else to your site to get it to work.

    flyingrose,
Thanks again for the reply. I am going to call me Google AdWords rep. and see if they know how to track exact keyword/phrase with CPC/Organic searches. I am not sure if we are going to continue using IndexTools, I don't really see the benefit.

I'm using both IndexTools and Google Analytics for one account. The best thing about IndexTools is that the data is live so if you're testing new ads or dealing with a crisis situation you have data immediately.

Revenue numbers seem to be delayed by at least a day in Google Analytics. That is no big deal when things are stable but not nearly as useful when you want to be able to see the immediate results of changes.

The other major advantage to using IndexTools is that you can set it up to track incoming traffic, referrals and sales from sites you don't have referral codes on. Google Analytics requires using their format so if you don't have a relationship with the other sites or can't get the codes inserted easily or in a timely manner you can't track that data.

"I tag all my Google keywords with this format:"

Sorry, is there somewhere that can describe how to tag a Google Keyword? Is this something that I have to do in Index Tools or in AdWords?

And another (stupid) question: Is there a place in Analytics to view time of day page visits/page views?
