Hi there,

My local business directory that I run (listed in my profile) ranks well (top 10) with things like:

cityname province directory
province directory
cityname province a few specific keywords
cityname province businesses
and a few business names in our city
etc, etc ...

What I would like to improve on, is that it currently lists in google as #118 when I have the cityname and province on their own.

Sorry if it seems like I want to rule my city *grin*
Does anyone have any suggestions that would help me achieve this?

(Google appears to be re-indexing the site once a week, and the site has been up about 3 1/2 years).

Do you have a page that is about the cityname and province only and that uses those words as the title, in the keyword and description meta tags, and within the content of the page as the sole content on the page?

Yes.

I have a page that is cityname_province.htm

the internal link anchor text to it is "city of XXXXX" contained within a sentence which says where it is.

the keywords and desc on this page are short - about 6-8 words. city province are the first two in each case. Title contains "city province country directory"

It isn't a lengthy page. It contains a half dozen links (the university, college, newspaper etc.) city and province are reasonably prominent on this page.

But since this site is a directory site, there's also a little about internet traffic and then lists about 6 or so places to promote your site if you're in our city.

Do you think this page might be worth focusing on?

I had also wondered about adding a page that contains some city province photos.

I don't get how some people can trick google into displaying an adsense only site right up at the top of the listings in only a few months, and I have been keeping my efforts clean for 3 1/2 years and can't quite get it to the top.

You could try having separate pages that each focus on one aspect of the phrase you're targeting. For example, one for just the city, one for just the province, one for the city plus province and so on.

Search engines index text and not photos (except for those that specifically index photos and even then they're actually indexing what the photo is NAMED rather than what is in it) so I don't know that a photo page would be effective. Might be popular with visitors though or attract incoming links.

Speaking of incoming links that is the other thing that can move you up the search engines. Do you have sites using the words you're targeting as the name of the link coming to your page? (This is referred to as "anchor text".)

The most valued links are from .edu domains so if you know someone in education (teacher, admin, student) with Web space on a .edu server who would be interested in putting up information and a link about your location that would boost your perceived value particularly at Google.

Since you do offer local information you may be able to interest the local educational institutions and libraries in providing links to your page(s).

My anchor text on incoming links has been mostly

city province directory

I wanted to first dominate that ... (which now I do) because that is exactly what the site is.

Now I want to dominate without the word "directory" but I don't want to undo the improvements that I made this year already.

I'll start changing a few of the ones that I have control over.

I figured that photos might help for a few reasons, one of which would be google's image search, and popularity/traffic, which you mentioned.

I could take some nice photos (that I own the copyright to), and offer them for free download. Giveaways are typically a good thing to have on a site, and this site has some free tools and free downloads, so it would fit right in with its demographic.

I also wanted to add an RSS feed from our local daily newspaper but their site doesn't seem to have one.
