I am running a fairly old version of Web Trends Log Analyzer and it is reporting something I can not explain.

For several PDFs on my site, it reports 900+ downloads but only 35(ish) visits.

I understand several factors that can result in downloads > visits, but not to this extent.

Anyone have a good explanation for this?

Thanks,

Rogue spiders could be a cause.

While thew main search engines have developed site friendly spiders, there are a lot of brutal ones out there - many are software applications designed to mass download files such as images (I'll leave you to guess the type of images), music etc. PDF files would be picked up by those. Most of this software is brutal and quite capable of downloading the same file hundreds of times within a short period of time.

Next time you notice this, download and examine your log file. Get the IP addresses of the IPs from which the mass downloads are coming from then do a whois. It may tell you a lot.
