Seems the market has rebounded after the 777 point drop yesterday, but not all the way. I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Exciting scary times. Thrill seekers ought to be getting a rise out of this crazy ride wink

Did anyone else see the ad in MJ's link about aliens landing?

It was for Offshore Investing. I think the Federation of Light, no matter how far advanced their technology may be, is still going to have trouble offloading properties on pluto smile

How long before China is the Worlds Super Power? I used to think it was going to be 50 years, now maybe 15-20 years.

Let's keep sending Billions of dollars over to Iraq and kill off our young men and women. That's a great idea that seems to be gaining us anything at all.

I think I saw a few typo's in some of your posts, it said "Oil Companies", it should say "Oil Country" or "Oil Government". Please make those corrections ;-)

Imagine McCain getting into office and loosing his battle with extreme old age and Alzheimer. Palin steps in as the President! Here comes China...

I want to quickly correct something --- whenever I hear the words "Over Population", I like to retort that with a fun little stat ---

Right now, there are 6,602,224,175 in the world (6.6 billion). Statistics show that worldwide, the average family size lies somewhere around 4, depending on the study. Let's use that to divide the world population into a reasonable number of families (households).

Doing that math, we get 1,650,556,043 4 person households.

Now, for the fun part ... The state of Texas has 171,904,640 acres of land. If we were to give every household 1/8 of an acre, which is enough for a 2,000 square foot, 4 bedroom house with a 2 car garage and enough backyard to put a BBQ and a swingset (I know this because I have a house just like that on 1/8 acre), you can chop the state of Texas up into 1,375,237,120 land plots/houses.

The numbers don't work out perfectly (you have add Oklahoma into the mix) but essentially, you can fit nearly the entire world's poplulation into the state of Texas, with everyone having a decent sized house and land.

So, while it might feel crowded, and while the stats might seem alarming, and while the doom and gloomers might say that we are running out of space and resources ... remember this fun fact. It puts a lot of things into perspective.

Well, maybe not, but it's a fun thing to know.

Isn't that crazy ??

And I remember when the olympics were on and one of the nights they showed a world map, and the entire US fit inside of China almost twice.

jcokos, that's an interesting concept. We could ship all the world's overpopulation and poor to Texas and let them deal with it. smile (My apologies to any Texans here.)

And yes, Curt, "credit and lots of it" is a way of life to far too many people. Back in my day (boy, I'm starting to sound like an old fart here) if you couldn't afford college, you didn't get to go.

You lived at home, and worked your tail off at a low-paying job while you attended a local community college. Nowadays, you apply to the party school of your choice and let student loans pay for everything. By the time you graduate and you're $100K in debt for your education, what's a little more? I mean, you deserve that new Mercedes or BMW now that you've graduated, right?

A lot of people have no concept of financial responsibility. After Hurricane Katrina, some of the "victims" who received government relief checks went out and immediately spent them on crap like $800 designer handbags and console video games instead of using the money to improve their situation, as was intended. sad

Sure we can all fit inside of Texas. Problem is each one of us uses much more land than we actually own. Take for example: how much land would you need to own if you were to feed yourself 100%? How much more would you need if you factor in land to build your cars, new furniture, appliances, fuel to power your cars and electric items, etc. All of the sudden 1/8 acre wouldn't be big enough by any means.

With that said, there are people who have and use an exceedingly excessive amount of material for their own use because in all bluntness they are huge gluttons in various forms. No one needs a dragster that eats up gallons within seconds. No one needs a 15,000+ sq. ft. house just to live in nor do they need 4 hummers, 6 mercedes, and 2 ferraris. Just because they can doesn't mean they should.

But, how do you stop the waste? And since those wasteful wealthy people have what they have, many other people who are poor wish they could do the same thing and so they justify waste in their own ways (for example: over eating and getting very fat). Since the wealthy are irresponsible, why should we be more responsible than they are? Doesn't seem fair to lots of people and so goes the vicious cycle of waste, greed and more earth problems for future people. It will never stop until someone who is "truly good" is able to force change to happen and that doesn't mean Obama or any other president. People cannot make other people change. Humans are doomed left to their own vices.

You bring up some good points, Curt. But it's not just the wealthy. The fact is that a small proportion of the world's population consumes a disproportionate amount of the earth's resources. The planet simply could not sustain itself if everyone lived like the average American.

While some in third world countries are lucky to get enough rice each day to barely prevent starvation, we're gorging ourselves on steaks and burgers. Beef production is a very inefficient use of land.

I'm not saying we should all turn into tree-hugging hippies, but people need to wake up and see what how much damage "progress" and our greed has done to the planet in the past 100 years alone, and the "legacy" that we are passing down to future generations.

Like I said, when the poor see what the wealthy do, they begin to waste in their own ways too. And don't forget, China is trying to come onboard for modernization inline with the USA. So picture a clone of USA that has over 1,300,000,000 people (4x USA population) doing the same thing. The poor want to do what the wealthy are doing. It's truly scary and happening.

We need to be hyper-recycling and need to be super efficient with resources right now, but we don't even know where to begin. Plus big business makes it very difficult to live without waste because everything they do is built on waste, pollution and making money. Very unfortunately, it's cheaper to waste and pollute than it is to take care of this earth. We are in trouble.

Yes JQ, beef is very inefficient use of resources. It's possible to live on crops, but that will require a huge mindset change. Can we force people to drop the idea that everyone needs at least one helping of meat per day? That's a tall order. The wealthy set the standard--the rest follow.

The world's population is increasing by about 9 million to 10 million extra mouths to feed every month... and that number is also increasing.

Don't think the multitude of meat loving (human) carnivores would take too kindly to switching to rabbit food. That mindset will only change when humanity as a whole is threatened. An uprising of livestock worldwide would probably do the trick! Needless to say, the super wealthy will always get away with anything, so long as the price is right.

Take Mars for instance. If after a couple years of mans' meddling on the planet, how long before we see real-estate agents advertising property on the red planet? Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bill G. of the future buying a quarter of the planet for resale. Human greed is definitely man's eventual downfall. And yep, we have no one else to blame but ourselves.

It's quite ridiculous for someone to buy up mars real estate when no one owns it to begin with. If I want part of mars, I'll just take a part of it for myself at no cost. I ain't paying ole Bill anything to have a part of it.

<here's me dreaming...> and if warp engines can get me to another solar system that would support life, I'll just claim the whole planet and live in peace without others who might mess it up tongue

Orwellian it may sound, but highly plausible. Animal testing is bound to backfire some time so don't be surprised to see cow and chicken leading a mass protest for beast rights smile

No one owns Mars. At least not yet anyway. But think about this scenario. World governments buddying up to set up their military bases on the planet (New world order). Once they've finished all their experiments, parts of the planet are auctioned off to highest bidder. And like planet earth, the vicious cycle of human greed and waste begins. A human condition we just can't get away from.
But would this other planet have the 'Net? If not, I'm not going.
Will look into it sir and get back to you wink
