I heard about a site where you book a room without exactly knowing which hotel it is but you can get suites from $50 and up because you're flexible.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get the really good hotel deals in Los Angeles?

I think you're talking about Priceline.com. YOu tend to pick the level of hotel you want (3 star, 4 star, 5 star, etc..) and the price you are willing to pay and they'll match you up with one.

Los Angeles is a huge city. You need to have a clue as to where you want to stay. Do you have specific destinations you plan to visit? If so, pick a central location based upon your destinations.
There are many "bad neighborhoods" in L.A. - places where you shouldn't stay just because you found a cheap rate if you don't have another compelling reason for being there, know what I mean?
My advice would be to stick with well-known chains so you have a clue what you're getting. Even Motel 8 has standards.
Years ago we went to Austin, TX and I booked a room at a place described as "quaint" and "historical". When we got there, the place was such a dump we refused to stay there.
EDIT: Or is that Motel 6? If you don't care about room service or luxurious amentities, places like Travel Lodge offer good/consistent accommodations.
If you're out to "live it up", then paying a bit more for what you get is worth it. You're on vacation, so you deserve to enjoy it.

Heck, just landing in LA airport was enough to freak me right out. When I was told my next flight was cancelled, after a long time of waiting in the airport itself, and I was shuffled off to "some hotel" it became a nightmare.. I agree with JeromeQ - don't put your $ over your security, comfort or peace of mind.

Thank you very much for good advice. Do you guys think that Pricerunner also includes "bad" services? You choose areas, like LAX airport/Hollywood etc, give a price-suggestion but then you're hooked - if they find you a deal then they'll bill you.

Lennart, are you a member of AAA? If so, you can pick up a free "tourbook" for California which lists accommodations with their amenities, rates and ratings. Many places offer a discount for auto club members.
Oops, just checked your profile... guess if you're in Sweden you're not a AAA member but I believe they do have international affiliates.
Okay, here's my recommendation. Stay near the beach! The beach is a big destination for most people who come to southern California. Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach are generally considered decent areas.
Another reason to stay by the beach is it's cooler there because of the on-shore airflow from the ocean. I live inland near Pasadena and it's been over 100 degrees here the last few days. Just awful!
I would avoid staying in Hollywood. There might be a few decent hotels, but much of Hollywood is pretty "seedy".

I agree with Jerome 100% - and her suggestion of staying near a beach. I'd be there if I could right now! We're breaking inland heat records [ugh] from 50-60 years ago!
Ditto on 'Hollywood' as well.. fun place to visit for the day but I wouldn't want to be there over night or with a family. LAX area isn't much better - very industrial. Santa Monica has some great hotels just off the beach (close enough to walk for some) and it's a very nice, clean, little town with lots of little shop areas and the 3rd Street Promenade which is an outdoor mall/tourist trap/shopping/eating/etc place. It's also relatively close to freeways and other attractions.
Where/what were you hoping to do here? Do you have a specific location to go to?

I think the beach idea is great! The plan is to visit friend's & colleague's in the Industry as well as doing some sight-seeing. We also plan to rent a car so we're pretty much flexible as for where to stay.

Yeah, what crash said about Santa Monica. Of the places I mentioned, I think that would really be your best bet.
Two very nice Santa Monica hotels (read: expensive) I've stayed in that are virtually right on the beach are Shutters and Loews. And of course, rooms with an ocean view are the most expensive.
BTW, both of those are waaaay out of my league. I was staying there for business meetings.
Here's a list of some other Santa Monica hotels.

You need not go to the tourist trap of the Republic of Santa Monica. Culver City is close LAX and has a very nice downtown that's both interesting and safe to walk around at night. Or try Playa del Rey, the secret beach town of the LA metro area. It's on the beach, has 46 restaurants and 3 hotels. PDR is very far from the flashy/blinky Hollywood scene, and the locals like it that way.
Or you could go a bit South of LAX try El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, or Redondo Beach. All 3 are nice (safe) places to stay. Each has lively nightlife with a strong bar scene, if you're interested in that sort of thing.
And we can't forget Venice or Marina del Rey. Venice is known the world over for being, ah, well, Venice. Hippy, trendster alternative lifestyles (with a gang element for spice) live in Venice. MDR has 6,000 boats in the marina. Um, yeah, did I mention that Playa del Rey is a nice place to stay?

I used to live in Venice and specifically did not mention it as a likely place to stay because of the gang danger. If you think a "gang element" adds spice, I think you're wrong.
It's been a number of years, but Venice used to be so gang ridden I wouldn't recommend staying anywhere there. Not sure how it is now, but the last poster even mentioned the gang element, so I'd assume it's still pretty current.
For Lennart coming here from Sweden, I'd totally suggest staying away from Venice because of that gang element.
The last thing you need is being "jacked" by some homies because you're recognizable as an "easy" target from out-of-town.
Like crash said about Hollywood, it's a place you might feel okay with visiting during the day, but I wouldn't want to stay there as a tourist at night.

You can also try Orbitz for the hotels - I've found they're pretty good too.

Someone else bumped it with a spam post... since Lennart has his answer now, I think it's time to close the thread! (just so Sinoed doesn't get confused )
