Smoking that is. 20-some years of the demon nicotine and I´ve decided to quit on Monday. I am healthy as a horse myself, I smoke on the patio so´s not to pollute the air in our house for the kids, I LIKE smoking. But...

... well maybe, I think the deck´s stacked and if i don´t get off the baccy-wagon now, I won´t live long enough to see my children grow up.

Anyone here, been there, done that and got some advice for me. I am already into withdrawal panic and I haven´t even started to quit yet.sad

Remember, the urge for a cigarette lasts for about three minutes so get into the habit of doing something else when it hits. I took to cycling around the block a few times when it hit me. Quit smoking and get fit at the same time!

Drink plenty of water to help purge your system.

Don't have a pack on stand-by just in case you succumb. That's admitting defeat before you start.

Avoid places and situations where you know others will be smoking when possible.

Optional: After you have been smokeless for a couple of days find a smoker and go stand by them just to get an idea of how bad you smelled for the past 20 years. It will shock you.

Smoker myself. I heard one great quote about quittin': "quiting smoking is easy; I have done it a millon times"...

That quote aplies to me. Good luck, wish you the best, stay strong. The couple of times I quit, always feel back when drinking beer/coffe (liquid drugs seem to make me want to smoke). Buy bubble gum; chewing things kills anxiety.

I smoked until 6 years ago...

First off. JUST STOP..NOW.... just throw it all away, the packs, matches, ash trays, whatever. Send them all to the trash now.

Make the commitment to yourself and your family. A REAL committment and be prepared to have cravings but work through them. Replace the act of having a cigarette with a drink of water. and a quick walk.

I smoked for 18 years or so, and quit on New Year's Day a year and a quarter ago. This time I'm done for good.

My prior best was 9 months, and then back to smoking, so whatever you do, don't ever let your guard down...

The first time I quit, I took up the harmonika. I played instead of smoking and actually got quite good. This time (my last time), I just quit.

I had been easing off for the year prior and smoking smokes with fewer additives, and that helped, but it's mostly a matter of making the same decision to not smoke over and over and over and over again. It's like a second (or third or fourth) job.

"Oh, what do you do?"

"Me? I resist smoking, and you?"

Thanks all.

I did stop once before, years ago. It was on a bet, stop smoking for six months and I´d win a holiday in a swanky resort. I won and enjoyed the holiday, then started smoking again.rolleyeys Stupid, I know.

Can´t stop this second Americlicks, because I am having a BBQ on Sunday. I would either give in and light up or spend a miserable day watching everybody else happily puffing away.

Come Monday, I´ll stop cold turkey and then drop out of sight for a while.

I did an on-line quiz thing on a stop smoking site and it told me that in all the years I´ve smoked, I´ve spent GBP32,700 on cigs. Can you believe that?

I would advise to just stop cold turkey. I've seen my mom try to quit every year and she just can't do it. Tried gradually each time. Now, she cheats and puffs on my dad's pipe. Yes, I actually admitted that in public -- my mom smokes my dad's pipe. She thinks she's doing good. rolleyeys

Just do it.

Im about to take the plunge as its making me VERY unhealthy. Ive been smoking for 8 years and Im up to about 40 a day (Because I can now smoke while Im working)

Absolutely GENIUS. I was thinking of taking up playing cards, not playing a game, just picking them up and becoming very dextile with them. But harmonica is even better! Thanks Ethan.

I remember someone told me once or seeing it on tv etc that giving up smoking is as hard as giving up heroin ie it has the same addiction level ?! I cant say myself as i dont smoke so i dont know what its like to give up. But is it that hard ?

Can't imagine what it's like being addicted to cigs. But, if this helps you mentally to want to quit bad enough... Imagine being able to scrape off slimey grayish snot off of the inside of your lungs and that's what you get when you continue to puff cigarrettes or any smoking product.

That concept kept me from wanting to smoke when I was a teen seeing how it pollutes the lungs. Of course not wanting all the health problems associated with smoking was very important too. I also remember the ugly mouth sores that some of my friends would get from chewing snuff (yeah I know it's not smoking, but pretty much as addictive).

My younger brother smoked for 10+ years and quit last spring. He's glad too because now he can breath better. He use to say he was healthy while smoking but he'll admit he feels healthier now than when he smoked.
