I'm thinking of making a website and including a brand name in the URL. ie: brandname-like.com OR could I use -style OR -type.

This brandname is so well known that we all refer other items of this nature as brandname-like, type etc. Thanks.

What exactly is your question here? Off-hand, I'd say if you use "brandname" whatever in your url, you run the risk of the original brandname holder going after you for infringement.

Before Nation's Bank aquired Bank of America, (and adopted the Bank of America branding), we had a similar named site set up.

nations-home-equity-loans or nations-home-loans or something similar to their Nation's name. It was an affiliate site that that eventually made top 5.

That's when Nation's Bank noticed us.

Even though we had a totally different site layout and color scheme we still got the cease and desist from them. And we immediately did! Fighting one of the top 5 banks in the US over $750 a month? Not worth it!

Thanks Yellowwing. After reading what you and JeromeQ said, I haven't given that thought, another thought.

    That's crap! Makes me wish I woke up the morning you could start registering domain names and I would've registered, www.coke.com , cococola.com coco-cola.com www.coke.net, fox.com, fox.net, cnn.com, walmart.com, etc.

    Bunch of corporate pencil necks.

That's understandable Rezac but try also looking at it from the other side.

What if you were using www.Rezac.com as an Internationally recognized URL and someone came along and started using www.Rezak.com or even worse, www.Rezax.com? How would you feel at someone trying to take away from your name recognition?

That should've been part of the company marketing plan to cover all those bases.

In all honesty, if you're positioned well with your .com and somebody comes out with .net .biz .co.uk whatever, how would that effect you, really?

You're running a business and your customers aren't going to become someone elses customer by mistake. They can try and trick people, but they still have to perform a task, promise to deliver merchandise, or provide some sort of service.

If someone wants to be my shadow, I say bring it on.

    Rezac,
Companies view using their domain name that brands their company as a dilution of their trademark. That's how they see it. They don't want their trademark diluted in any possible way. Some of us might not agree with it, but that's how those companies view it.

If sony.tv were own by a competitor, it might appear that sony was promoting competing products.

    "Bunch of corporate pencil necks."
Establishing a brand to have somebody else trade off established goodwill and efforts is not liked.

On the other hand there have been many ridiculous cases surrounding trademark infringement where big boys have acted way out of line.

Somewhere in between the little guy & the big there need to be an advocate.
