I bought my hubby a web cam and download skype, so he can talk to his son who was injured in the war this past May and remains in the hospital in a different state. We and his son are both in the USA.

My web cam and volume and all the other things I needed to test out are all working great.

When I ran a test call to my cell phone up popped a text bubble saying .21 cents a minute ! Yikes! My understanding was we could do this for free.
My local long distance plan ( not cell - land phone ) is unlimited 24/7 within the United States. However when I also ran a call to my land phone, the same text came up about the .21

    I then found this:
    [link]

Do I need to sign up/buy that plan, so this does not cost per minute for him to Skype?

Also I want to Skype a few times myself and get to know the ins and outs so I can show hubby. He hates computers lol Is it safe to join a group chat so I can figure this out before he calls his son?

His son has a low frustration level right now, due to the brain injury, so we need to have this perfect before we call him, other wise it could be a frustrating experience for his son - which we don't want !

Just to be clear of our intent, being as I don't know all the "tech" names for this.

Hubby wants to be able to see and talk to his son at the same time. His sons mom already has their/ his sons skype all set up to do this and ready to go and is just waiting on us.

I am hoping to have this set up so they can Skype for Thanksgiving Day.
    Any help is appreciated. smile

Skype is free if it's skype to skype, if you are calling an actual phone line (mobile or land line) it will cost you.

That plan sounds pretty good, but could well be worth reading the small print just in case wink. But yeah, that plan should do exactly what you want smile

I hope your (step?)son is better soon

You pay if the call gets connected out to the regular phone network (home or mobile).

It is free if the other Skype user is also using Skype on their PC and the connection stays on the Internet all the way from you to them.

Beth, i speak to poeple all over the world for free, but who ever you call needs to be on skype also, as staed skype to skype calles are free

now, what some people do is redirect the skype call to a land line or cell, that you may have to pay for.

How do I know if I am calling skype to skype and not a land/cell phone?

I understand that if they redirect it - stinks to be me.

    But I mean otherwise.

I'm sorry to hear about that Beth,

For Skype, it works quite a bit like MSN or AIM, you have friends on Skype that use it and you can instant message, these people you can instant message you can also call for free. smile

Thanks - we were able to skype last night with someone BUT our video is not going through to them. Theirs came through to us just fine but we kept getting a message that ours was not loading.

I did everything I could think of and finally sent a request to tech support - we'll see what happens.

At the bottom of the window with their text in, click on "start my video".
