I find the traffic levels to be pretty low. At present, I think people see no reason to change from Google - they get satisfactory results and Google is still "cool", so why change? Evidently MSN has a tough battle on its' hands to get any real market share, despite all the avenues available to it to gain share (eg being the default in IE).

Word from inside MSN says that they are going to be making a real push to gain search market share for Q3 & Q4 2005. Apparently they recognize that they are laying lead eggs instead of golden ones in search even though they have tremendous leverage through their Browser. The MSN Beta that went live at the beginning of the year resembles Google and their goal is to be a real player in the search market arena. It is no secret that they are going to implement their own version of Adwords soon even though they signed a deal with YSN through 6/06.
Solidifying natural positions in MSN now may pay off nicely in the next year or so if they succeed in gaining share.

What I dont understand is the big drop in traffic after they left Yahoo - for me it's something like 30% reduction overall while Yahoo traffic looks just about the same if not a tad stronger.

I am seeing traffic from MSN that is steady for a couple of consumer terms. Conversion rate is lower than Google (like that is news) but not a bad stream of new eyeballs and buyers.
From my perspective, MSN seems to bounce rankings around by as many as 10 positions in the top 20 for a given phrase, and this is in between updates. I noticed major moves up for a couple of my sites when this topic was first posted, and I am seeing the effects on some phrases and not others. I am still trying to figure out the weighting system...
As for MSFT dumping a lot of money into moving their market share in search up, I hope it makes EVERYONE innovate, not just on the search side, but allowing us SEOs and Web Advertisers to do more with less and do so without being intrusive on the audience. More advanced metrics and research would get my attention too.
