Some e-books offer a branded copy which you can promote to your friends/associates and give away at your site. If the e-book has some valuable resources/content in it AS WELL as an ad for you/your company (hence, it's branded), then you'll be able to develop a lot of additional "free" traffic through the viral marketing nature of the internet.

I also use this form of marketing through several means. I offer free customizables to my subscribers. It has been working well.
