Are there any tools out there to search for these sites?

    Sure, you can look here:
    http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=deleted+domains

    or here:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&q=expired+domains

Thank you. I suppose this proves a point about key words or phrases. I was looking under 'discontinued', 'discontinued websites' etc. I didn't consider deleted.

Anyway thanks hopefully I can find some appropriate deleted sites with a high enough ranking.

I'm just speculating here that gaining one of these sites will increase traffic. Have anyone gone this route and was the results favourable?

When domain names aren't renewed by their original owner, the domains go through a deletion process:
    First they're put 'on hold'.
Then they're put in 'redemption period'.
Then they go to 'pending delete'.
Then at one particular point in time they are 'expired' which means that anyone can register them, on a first-come first served basis.

There are websites that offer back-order services for domain names. If you find a domain on the 'pending delete' list that you want, you can put a 'back order' on it through a company like pool.com. If one of those companies grabs (registers) the domain 1 second after it drops and you have a backorder on it, then you get it and are charged a certain fee for their services.

I found a number of sites that gives useful statistics on pending deleted sites.

    http://www.websitehostdirectory.com/deleteddomains.html

Gives the link popularity and Alexa rating. The price of back ordering seems very cheap considering the potentially profitable traffic benefits.

Has anyone come across any cheaper?
