Hey all,
Sorry this may be in the incorrect category for posting but seemed as the relevant location. I have a question. Thank you in advance for answers.
A company approached me and would like to be my sites official sponsor, "in addition" to sponsoring us, they write that they will offer us products relevant to our demographic for review.
My question now, what are the benefits of a sponsor.
I assume they will not be charged for advertising on my site, but I've never run into anything like this. What financial tradeoff's can I make with this compan? Do they support our bill's, or do I charge them a lump sum for sponsoring us for, as an example, six months? Plus the reviews of their products, which we normally would not of covered.
I see their benefits.
What type of renumeration can I ask for?

Well that is interesting.
Did their initial communication with you give you any idea of what level of coverage on your site they expect? To me if they are sponsoring your whole site as opposed to a channel within it then they´d be expecting their logo on every page in a prominent position. They might also be expecting some sort of exclusivity - or at least no direct competitors - which might mean you cannot accept any other advertisers from that sector.
I´ve only been involved in making deals with channel sponsors in the past - where a company would for example sponsor all the automotive content. I´d be wary of putting all my eggs in one basket if they are looking for exclusivity. Still they approached you so if a six month contract is what will suit you best, go for it!
If you are unsure what to ask for then calculate what you might bring in with your standard advertising rates, over a six month period and go up or down from there based on exclusivity or not, level of branding, etc.

Thanks for the reply. They did not offer any idea on the amount of coverage they would want. My site is not broken into channels or subsites, so coverage would be across all pages. We do daily news blurbs for our target audience on the products or industry related to our market, were kinda like a cross of F'ed Company. I figured they would want exclusive coverage on their products and possibly in addition to logo, some time of brand "Sponsored by CompanyX." Displayed on all content pages.
A six month contract would not be too bad, but would most companies i this instance settle for a three month? I've already thought on the product reviews, and If I let them be our sponsor, our readership would decline for "Favorable Item Reviews" and consider us sell-outs. Can't do that.
Thanks on the numbers to base a rate on, I can do something in that regard and was what I was looking for.

Hi Div,
Why not write back to them saying that until now you have not considered offering site sponsorship. Simply ask them what they have in mind without putting any ideas in their heads.
You can´t offer a sitewide exclusivity as they truly would own you then. Also I´d be very wary of having their site reviews pushed down your throat as your visitors will not respect you in the morning.
Doesn´t seem as if you have enough information on which to base a decision. Don´t be afraid of losing the deal because you are protecting the best interests of your site and its visitors.
They asked you, so come across as being a little relectant - by all means tell them that you are wary of pushing their reviews - and let them seduce you. You don´t have any hard sell here. They want you.
N.B. I wish some other members would kick in here because this is an interesting discussion and the more input Div gets the better he is going to feel dealing with this. Anybody had any similar experience or who has an ´official sponsor'?

Sorry I don't have any experience in this but I think what e10 said is good information. You should let them sell you and them go ahead and ask for a little more. They came to you so you must have something good to offer.
