My site's been open for just under 3 weeks now. I've spent $200 in GoTo, started a forum which has been relativy successful with 1800 posts in 3 weeks, submitted to search engines, have good content in an organized manner, and much origional content, have regested and got links on some other sites. However, I'm still having problems getting more than 200 hits on a daily basis. What else can I do? (Site is in profile).

Hi,We selling our own ADs and were interested to conisder pop-ups. However, I have never used pop-ups before and was wondering if it is possible to have pop-up that - get dispalyed once per week per repeat visitor (using cookies) OR - only on the first page when the visitor enters the site and not on any other page browsed by the user Thank you in advance. PS. I need technial advice ( javascript code or whatever method it is implemented in).

You could try a press release. Or you could try 'reporting' something that is 'exclusive', like breaking the Chandra Levy case wide open or something like that. In fact, that's how the Drudge Report got started; Matt Drudge broke the Monica Lewinsky scandal.Or you could have a website with your domain name printed on a sign and stand on national television somewhere behind a reporter that's on live tv. Curiously enough, there were a few sites that did that during the botched "Palm Beach voting scandal".

yes it is possible to use cookies to only show the pop once a week, and it woudl be asy to make sure it was only on your front page as you only add the code to that one page.I don't have any examples of the java script you would need to use but I am sure some one will come along and post somthing. I woudl sugest that you go and look at free java script sites as they will have them, for you to use.

Your site is still new - under 3 weeks you say. Getting 200 hits (are these unique visitors or just hits) daily already is not a bad achievement. It will take a few more weeks before your site shows up in the search engines. Keep promoting your site through link exchanges, banner exchanges, topsites, maybe webrings. It's early days - traffic should pick up over the nex few months if your site is good. Don't forget a "Recommend-It" script on your site. Keep optimizing your site for the search engines.

Hi, another forum member has posted some code that you can modify to suit your needs. Basically you would want to set the expiration date on the cookie to 7 days, so it pops once a week and just put the code on your main page. For more info see the following URL ... http://speculativevision.com/cookietest.html

It is 200 uniques per day we had a high of 600 and 800 on two seperate day though. I'm listed in the www2 section of google right now, but I couldn't even find my site in the top 50 on any potential search words.

Don't give up!!! Your site is less than 4 weeks old and you are getting over 150 uniques a day. Some sites don't get even that after a year! Give it some time. Your site still needs to show up in the search engines. Build some link exchanges. You are doing well so far.

December 3, 1998: “I'm unsure what I'm going to do for the next few hours, since I've just about given up on my poetry web site. I should keep looking around, I suppose, but I'm seeing a glut of poetry on the Internet and most of it is just real bad. I'm getting a few scattered visitors to my site, but no one so far as contributed. And no wonder - there are dozens, if not hundreds, of other sites out there asking for contributions. Sigh. I'll keep at it a bit longer, but I doubt I'll be moving my site to its own domain any time soon.”Those words were written a few weeks after uploading my poetry to a subdirectory on my personal site. It’s darn awfully easy to get discouraged, and I suspect most do at some point. I did move it to its own domain, though, exactly one month after being ready to throw in the towel. The day I registered the domain, the site received 151 uniques. February 13, 2001, that site was registering between twenty to thirty thousand uniques per hour, with the month coming in at just under two million. (Valentine’s month is good for poetry sites!). Even during the summer, when our traffic drops to half it’s usual rate, we’ll come close to one million uniques a month. By Christmas, if last year is any indication, we’ll be breaking our February records. And by next Valentine’s month, I’ll be forced to move from a dedicated server to a server farm. None of that would be happening, though, if in 1998 I had given up after just a few weeks of trying. Hang in there and give it half a chance…

Then I guess my question is what did you do between January 1999 and January 2001 - in terms of promotion?[This message has been edited by sianews (edited 07-26-2001).]

Update: The little money I had in GoTo has run out and my hits have plummeted to 130 a day. And I thought 300 was bad... I got listed in Google, but not under an revelent search terms. The forums have stayed busy, but my staff posting 90% of the messages. I started a invite a friend script and a poll. I've spent the last 2 days beggin for reciperal links, but few have worked. With the low amount of hits, I'm again, ready to quit . The only thing that keeps me motivated is I know this is a great site, and that is better the 99% of similar ones, I just can't get people to it. I sent a press release noting my opening last month but it was obviously not picked up anywhere. I know you suggest breaking stories, but what am I going to break? I'm sitting in front of a 4 year old computer in Stow Ohio.

Patience. You need to be patient. Nothing happens overnight on the internet anymore. 130 uniques after one month of being online is a good effort. Wait until the SEs pick up your site. Patience, patience, patience.

If you are not ranked well for your search terms in Google, then you do not have your pages optimized properly/effectively for those terms. Since there are more similarities than differences in the ways SEs rank pages, this will carry over to other SEs. You will need to spend more time/expertise on optimizing your pages.Google does not list pages for search terms. They use the information on your page, and that determines how you rank for particular terms.

Then the problem with Google's ranking stems from the fact I update twice a day. Every page is completly new each day. So one month I might rank good, one month bad. Who would have though this would work against me.

Heres a thought: I noticed that Rush and Michael Savage and other conservative talk show hosts sometimes mention web sites they get info off of: why don't you try contacting them directly:rush@eibnet.com paulreveresociety@yahoo.com [This message has been edited by thinkfuture (edited 08-01-2001).]
