I came across CNETS Searching beyond Google and Yahoo: nine online search engines compared.

    Thought others would be interested.

    That's a biased review, flyingrose.

Higher (than MSN) rating to A9 is incorrect since its a MetaSearch, not an oragnic search engine. A9 uses google primarily.

Same with altavista, Aol and Lycos, they're just powered by traditional search engines with no "great" additional functionality.

If they were comparing metasearch engines too, it'd be a different story, but then too, they'd have to include nice, upcoming metasearchers like fazzle, ixquick, surfwax, qelly, killerinfo, zapmeta etc..

IMO, metasearches provide more relevant results with additional search functionality (except for a little slower speed).

Thanks for the great insights. Do you see any competition for Google on the horizon? Maybe a metasearch with the pockets to promote heavily?

Sorry if it sounded too strong, what I mean is, its unfair/incorrect to compare metasearch engines to traditional engines. Can't mix them both.

Metasearch would provide better, more relevant results, but since its not their index, and the speed is slow relatively, they lose it to traditional engines, but true, there's no killer yet.

Even if there IS a killer search engine out there somewhere they'll either have to have deep pockets to promote it or end up partnering or getting taken over by someone who does.

I suppose a smaller company with a really great PR machine might be able to do it. Techies and researchers tend to use metasearch engines more than other Internet users.

Most Newbies will use whatever pops up on their browser when they go online so ISPs can have a huge influence on search engine usage.

From an SEO and PPC standpoint, having too many people using one search engine is hazardous to stable traffic to any Web site. Google has too much of it right now.

An algorithm change can turn results upside down on both organic and paid search. From the viewpoint of not "having all your eggs in one basket" online businesses would be far better off with the traffic spread around some.

You said everything in those few lines, flyingrose. smile

Yes, there're a few engines providing relevant results with additional functionalities, but they require heavy promotion to have new/novice users use them or they'll be taken over by the topguns as you said.

Except for a little slow speed, Metasearch engines are great to use, but most people (new/novice users) don't understand.
