I'm a bit concerned about shopping engines that enable product reviews.

Firstly, I've seen some reviews that just reeked of competitive sabotage. It seems pretty easy in some cases for people to take a shot at companies they compete with, anonymously.

Secondly, I rarely leave feedback myself when I buy things. I'm just busy. On the other hand, it is my experience that people who feel they have had a BAD experience are most likely to leave feedback. That makes me think that you could easily have a significant ratio of negative feedback, no matter how hard you try, given that the happy customers usually just go on their way.

Any thoughts on the feedback process of such sites? Reassurance? Experiences?

Thanks!

I should probably qualify the above by also asking, do all the major sites require an actual trackable purchase before they allow feedback? For example, there are opinion sites out there that are a virtual free-for-all with negative comments, with no purchase necessary before you unload on someone.

In my experience, people have given bad reviews to their competition and good ones for themselves.

How valid the reviews are may depend on the way the site sets the criterion for who can post reviews. Those at sites like Amazon.com and eBay probably are more likely to be useful because of the sheer volume.

I've made it a point to post positive reviews on businesses I like in places like Local.Yahoo.com because they're worth recommending and I find such reviews useful when I'm looking for a business.

Like anything else in life the reader should exercise some critical thinking when deciding the merits of any individual review.
