Hey all,

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are for ask.com? I've got a feeling there going to be a big competitor for the 2nd/3rd spot in the search engine war.

Ask Jeeves seem to be developing there own 'labs' area...

hmmm, any thoughts?

IMO they are already the one to watch - I slate them as the # 4 SE.

In time, and with some financial backing, they might give MSN a good run. Trouble is, with that same time and their VAST access to funding, MSN could actually trump Yahoo and wrestle with Google if they ever wake up.

Ask does have some interesting ideas and solid, user-friendly thinking active - Always a fave. smile

Good from a search standpoint, but traffic is key. Will they buy it? No signs yet. I don't think they will gain market share thru better search, unless it is mind numbing better ... and i don't see that on the horizon.

I have always believed their biggest stumbling block has been funding. Not enough to actually market themselves enough to grab more market share.

lol, I could understand that, lack of money means lack of everthing :s

I'd class the Jeeves man as the 4th best too, but they seem to be trying to catch up, and because Yahoo's getting better and better (not!) and microsoft are just microsoft, they could do well, unless of course Microsoft wake up like SportsGuy said.

>>with some financial backing

They were bought by Barry Diller earlier this year - so money isn't the problem - just depends how much he'll spend on it.

yeah, but there is a fundemental difference setting the owners money aside.

Monday.... Google announces Analytics for free ... Tuesday ... Yahoo announces shoposphere ... Wednesday ... Google launches
Google Base ...

Barry Diller isn't in talks with AOL trying to acquire traffic, nor much else I hear of. I hope, but don't hear it. What has Ask announced ... a few months ago ... new ppc program of their own ... couple months ago ... we're thinking about dropping Jeeves ... last month ... a new Save Jeeves blog ... this month ... still using adwords.

Without their own systems like AdSense, MSN & Ask are at a clear disadvantage regarding $ market share.

true, maybe the Jeevester is just prepareing themselves before they begin anything like that

Maybe they think 'who would want to advertise on a search engine that doesn't do much?'

So there bringing some more guns to the war before they dig in smile

I'm guessing Ask is just happy to be top of the tier 2 heap - not a bad place to rest on laurels if you need to.
