there both about equal, PPC is good for immediate placements (the sponsered links section on a SE search page) and SEO gets your site into the organic section (the non-sponsored section) but SEO can take many many months and can target hardly any keywords compared to PPC
So PPC to start off with SEO in the background, then PPC on other keywords once your SEO is in place
also please remove your link

Search results have two sections: the normal "organic" search results, where SEO techniques to improve the site can improve your position, and the "paid inclusion" section, usually pay-per-click, where your position is controlled by how much you bid.
Optimising a site for better organic listings can have lasting rewards; whereas for PPC, as soon as you stop paying you no longer appear in the results at all. For PPC you need to keep an eye on your ROI (Return On Investment) to make sure that you are making profit, not a loss.

To my mind, good SEO is explicitly expected of the Web Dev/Design team. They are not earning their paycheck if they don't build in good SEO stuff. That said, we also have paid outside people to work on our SEO needs.
Further, we see PPC as advertising that is directly related to generating sales. SEO might address soft issues of usability and how people feel about the site; PPC is just for getting targeted clicks to make people buy our stuff.
If I had a limited budget, I'd most likely go for SEO for the long term benefits. But some days you just need to move merchandise, in which case PPC is the way to go.

Yeah, organic is like having a nice, interesting storefront that invites people in to browse, whilst PPC is like slapping adverts on a billboard for a limited time to catch more people.

SEO = long-term growth strategy for a website
PPC = short-term traffic driving strategy or sales driving tool

PPC for immediate exposure and to support areas where the website is not yet fully indexed (positioned) and performing in natural search engine results. SEO or web site optimisation is for long term results. Foundationaly and in an ideal world all website would be optimised for successful performance in the search engines and search engines would provide results in order of importance to match a searchers request, however this is not the case.
I want to say something about ClickIt's post
To my mind, good SEO is explicitly expected of the Web Dev/Design team. They are not earning their paycheck if they don't build in good SEO stuff. That said, we also have paid outside people to work on our SEO needs.
ummm... it is rare to see a good Web Dev/Design team that is also compitent in implementing SE friendly websites, in fact it is rare to see a good Web Dev/Design team that can produce user friendly and accessible websites. This doesn't mean they are lacking in skill, it means they have not been taught to allow for these things from the get go.
A good Web Dev/Design team these days will recognise this lack and either do some self education or bring in an SEO consultant to assist with their projects in order to be able to offer clients a complete marketing package.
With proper optimisation there is no lack of folks arriving that when finding your offer will buy provided your offer is good and competitive & matches their needs...
I agree that if you do not have great results under a selection of key phrases that meet your target markets needs and a website that sings to them then yes PCC is great.
and dudibob:SEO can take many many months and can target hardly any keywords compared to PPC
agreed that SEO takes a while and lots of work, but I do disagree about the "target hardly any keywords compared to PPC"...good optimisation will make the baby fly across an enormous amount of key phrases and words.
One other thing I think is important is that the % of clicks through to the high natural listings is reported as far greater than the clicks on PPC advertising.
Setting your budget to allocate funds for SEO and PPC as appropriate is the way to go.
If you do not do good SEO (making your website the best it can be to communicate your offer to your target market) you may never reach that point where PPC becomes unnecessary...and you can keep paying and paying.

Hard to add anything to the extensive, well written post of excell's! The other often forgotten element in the success of any web site is the effectiveness of the copy, or the actual text that people read. I would fold into the mix the services of a good copywriter with Internet experience where your budget permits.
Driving traffic to a web site is one thing, but converting them is ultimately the most crucial factor. Even if you do not have a budget for copy-writing services, you should spend a significant portion of your development efforts on writing the best copy you can possibly do.

The majority of sites I've run PPC campaigns for or evaluated for other reasons show not only a very limited knowledge of SEO but a severe lack of understanding regarding obstacles that seriously and negatively impact conversions (i.e. SALES!).
I created a sticky thread at the top of the PPC forums called Designing Web Sites for Higher Sales that I highly recommend Web site owners read and share with their Web development team.
One thing I would expand upon when considering the differences between SEO and PPC is that you can use PPC to target every pertinent keyword phrase - thousands or even tens of thousands of them. Even if you wanted to do that with SEO it would take a very long time.
What I generally recommend for new sites is to use PPC to drive traffic and generate income that can then be invested in SEO. This also provides the advantage of market research (the stats in your PPC accounts) so you KNOW which phrases are most important to YOUR business to target your SEO efforts.
Obviously there is an advantage in free traffic versus buying traffic and some research indicates that organic results get a higher CTR; however, with a well designed site and a lot of knowledge of how the PPC engines work, PPC ads can be used to drive a great return.
I don't see PPC as a short term strategy. On the contrary, properly done it can be a permanent method for generating more and more revenue.

Tom, PPC camapign don't "payout". I thin maybe you're thinking of things like Adsesne if you're looking to make money form a system.
In this case, Google's Adsesne program seems to be the front-runner with folks, but results vary.
If you're after "payouts", you're not after PPC, you're after contextual advertising, affiliate programs, etc.

Like above posters are mentioning. Use PPC to start as you ramp up your SEO. Gradually, try to gain a majority of your traffic through SEO.

Ha. Old thread bumped.
I forgot about that quote:Yeah, organic is like having a nice, interesting storefront that invites people in to browse, whilst PPC is like slapping adverts on a billboard for a limited time to catch more people.
