Is automated translation (using software) of a site into different languages helpful to get indexed in international (language specific) search engines?
What about the SE spider's approach to this type of translated site?

I generally don't recommend automated translation. The people who speak that language will know it's been automatically translated.
I don't recommend putting more than one language on the same web site--you really need to keep it to one language per domain name.
If you translate your site into other languages the search engines will pick up on it but when the actual visitors come to your site and see the pages they generally won't like the auto-translation. So, they'll just leave and won't "convert" for you.
Search engines favor sites that are in a particular language that's on a certain TLD and hosted in a certain country. So, if you've got a Spanish site they'll favor sites that are on the .mx or the .es TLD and hosted in Mexico or in Spain.

Publishing stuff that has been automatically translated is a bad idea.
It looks very very naff.
