    Hello all, you might think i misposted and that this should have gone in finding paid help, but actually what i am looking for with this post is a way to determine how to find paid help for Google and not be taken for a ride.

    I have paid for SEO work in the past and although the people i worked with were well-meaning, they were not able to perform at an acceptable level (meaning we had no noticable change in ranking). I get the feeling many people in this forums think they know enough to charge for doing this kind of work. My question to the forum is:

    How can I tell a true Google expert from someone who has basically read this posts and thinks he knows what he is doing?

    also related,

    If this is not the right place to look for one. Where should i be looking for such an expert?

    TIA
    murdock

    There's only one way that I know of and that's to ask people...lots and lots of people and go for someone you know people have had success with in the past.

    One thing to keep in mind is that you need to be sure your expectations are realistic and that what you want can actually be achieved in your budget.

    hehe,

    Well, I guess then the next question would be:

    Is there anyone you know you would recommend that has proven successful at Google SEO?

    I don't think the categories i am aiming for would be incredibly difficult. I see a competitor already gone to both number 3 and 5, and he is the only one who is eveidently doing SEO.

    I was planning on spending a couple thousand a month, but am not aware if the SEO continues over time or if it is a one time thing. We would like to get a couple top ten (preferrably top five) positions our top three search phrases. I am unaware of the going rates, so i might be much lower or maybe higher (doubt it) than the going rate. But we are willing to shell out a few bucks in order to get where we want to be.

    Is there some sort of going rate in this industry?

    "Is there some sort of going rate in this industry?"

    costs are as follows:

    success: 0 - infinity
    failure: 0 - infinity

    how about putting the site in question in your profile and provide a list of terms and people can see what your after and if its within their ability.

    I'll have a go.
    success = 0 - infinity
    failure = you pay nothing

    I think it would be important to obtain a list of client sites and a list of keyphrases and positions obtained for them. Most should be able to provide this along with the contact information for referrals. It would also be important to have an understanding of methods used and a way to assess the work done to ensure the positioning was acheived within the google guidelines.

    As far as costing goes, it would depend on (or should) the amount of work involved in order to be able to acheive your desired rankings. From what I am reading I feel your expectations may be a bit on the low side and a good SEO should be able to obtain multiple rankings in google on a number of variations of your key phrases - as well as do some keyword & competitive analysis to help find more.

    That of course is said without seeing your site, so I could well be off target smile It's also my experience that if a site is well optimised there is not a lot of maintenance once the rankings have settled in (expect a ramp up time of upto 3 months). Possibly competitors will move in to challenge your rankings, but that is to be expected.

    I once did a site that sold football shirts and discovered that there are over 80 ways that people searched for a certain Manchester football club's shirts.

    Point is, excell is absolutely right. Make sure you check and see if the people in your selection have got their clients an increase in relevant traffic and sales through their SEO work. Rankings on hundreds of relevant phrases may bring you more business than just concentrating on 3 or 4 - and a good SEO will probably do just that.

    As for cost? It all depends on the job - but a $2K per month budget should get you someone pretty decent.

    i would think the way to choose a SEO is search a professional forum such as this or ihelpyouservices.com, post your requirements, and from a shortlist of decent 'sounding' responses ask for referrals from their past/current clients, along with the optimised search terms, then search google for those terms and see where they are.

    a bit longwinded but pretty well guaranteed to come up with a very good SEO, and at $2000/month you should be getting the best.

    I second the advice about checking their work first. Ask for keyphrases they worked with. Check the comptetitiveness of the keyphrases and how well they are with it.
