Is there anyway to track ROI on a seo program. I am looking for a seo firm but I also want to know how to track the ROI.
Thanks for the help.

You look at the total amount of checks you wrote to the SEO people and you look at the total deposite you make from online sale.
NO. It would be difficult to figure out the ROI. And it depends on who and how ROI is defined. There better define the goal before you start.
IF the goal of the SEO is to place your targeted keyword at the top of the ranking. If that is accomplished, you ROI is high.
However there may be no direct relationship between high ranking in search engine and increase in sales. You could rank very high and sell nothing because wrong keywords were targeted.

Actually, many of the better SEO firms now offer custom ROI solutions as part of their SEM campaigns, which is key to any firms overall success, especially if you are running a lot of paid placements in your campaign.
Ours can aslo be set up to measure organic keywords/to sales conversions, as well as integrate email campaigns or calls to a certain 800 depending on where they saw the ad.
Atozcom is right when he says that you first have to definite what creates ROI for you - is it a direct online sale, contact form leads, or newsletter signups, what have you. Also, to the point of ranking high with little sales, of course you have to find an SEO firm that is conscious of good conversion analysis on your site and suggesting changes for higher conversions, and you have to be confident in their ability to target your audience properly with keyword research and creative ad writing.

Skiguide,so you are saying there are firms that can track a vistor all the way thru and track where the vistor came from and if they bought or not. If so could you let me know who they are.
Thanks

mikeboko, at the most basic level, a lot of us around here recommend that you use ClickTracks to run your logfiles through - it's a $500 analyzer program that visually shows you where visitors come from, and can tell you where those visitors exit or shows how they move on through your site, you can also tell the number of visitors per engine, or keyword phrase reached a "goal page" - usually your thankyou or order receipt page. (note, it's an agreggate total, not individual visitor tracking) the program is decent for tracking overall ROI on PPC programs, but not exactly a real-time, custom solution.
Lots of SEO firms offer another form ROI tracking, using pixel gifs or cookie based tools to record visitors on thank you pages, and allow you to match up your CPC to revenue generated. These typically rely on you using tracking URLs in your PPC ads. Costs of such programs range greatly, depending on level of customization or reporting.
If you're planning on spending a lot of money on an SEO firm, then you absolutely need to find out everything you can about what they offer for ROI tracking and see if it fits your needs/budget.

we've checked out conversion ruler before. Overall a pretty good product. The ASP pricing model can get pricey though for larger sites. we tend to use either our own custom solution or in-house tools.
