I'm just starting out as a web developer - I have about 2 1/2 years experience now. I'm having a hard time find finding people who want websites built. I'm thinking about going door to door(with businesses) to try to find work. Has anyone had success with doing something like this before?
I've tried posting on online communities with little success - I'll usually get an email or two but the individual is never serious.
For those of you that have made a living doing this stuff - how did you find new work?

I started out by working for a friend and it all snowballed from that. After making that first website successful I approached a few ISPs. Found one of like mind and vision and he gave me a project for one of his businesses to trial me. We then created a directory website and offered a select few friends (local businesses) free advertising pages to help kick it off..(picking up a few paying jobs along the way) and everything else has been word of mouth since then or via the existing websites with people finding them and seeking us out.

Door to door is a good start. It gives business owners a chance to see you up close and personal. Think about some nonprofit projects. Usually their board of directors are business owners.
