I am sorry if I'm posting in the wong spot. I couldn't a better place.

I have $5k monthly, earmarked for advertising/marketing, whatever you want to call it...and have been using into for magazine ads, tv, etc. (non-web) to get more customers and second would be to place above the crease for my search phrases on Google.......like the olden golden days.

I once read that: "all things being equal between competitors' sites then it all boils down to links." not sure? I am in a highly saturated niche and am slipping to page 2 and 3 for terms I used to have top ten (and top 5) listings.

I have looked at the competitor sites, they carry less products, don't seem to have any "magic" going on while navigating their sites, and the ones that are beating me are all have "more links". We are all in at about PR7 - some PR6

I am in a quandry (as I need the quickest bang for my bucks...I know!!!) as to whether I should keep buying & reading SEO manuals, and the forums and trying to learn as much as possible for on-site, SEO practises or hire another SEO firm for my monthly budget?

I have been in dialogue with jupitermedia and internet.com (think they're the same or connected) and they told me I could get about 18,000 impressions of my links on high ranking sites and this might put me over the top, I thought, for inblund links, which would put me ahead of my competitors. (Any comments?)

OR, I had a small SEO firm which didn't cost but a few 100 $ a month to manage my SEO. I was less & less impressed and severed ties a couple of weeks ago. Would I be better served to find an excellent SEO for my site or lay down the money for the high PR text links? They were kind of spammy like double breadcrumbs, item name in light gray text at the top & bottom of each page..stuff I could do myself...if it really works.

Any advice is like a drop of water in the desert!!!! I am dying on page 2!! I am in a highly saturated niche in the wedding industry, gifts, accessories, everything bridal-related BTW.

I'm ready to put the $$ on the table but where best to spend them? My friend is very keen on jupitermedia/intenet.com contract for a ton of their "rotating high PR links"? I never heard of them until this week?

Definitely keep reading the forums (these and other SEO forums) and learning everything you possibly can.

"I am in a quandry (as I need the quickest bang for my bucks...I know!!!) as to whether I should keep buying & reading SEO manuals, and the forums and trying to learn as much as possible for on-site, SEO practises or hire another SEO firm for my monthly budget? "

Forget buying manuals. They are fine for the basics, but you can learn much more in these forums (and seochat.com, webmasterworld.com, etc.) Read, read, read...

Also, spend less time on your on-page treawing and more time on getting backlinks. That is almost certainly why you are losing ground. Once your on-page stuff is optimized and doing well, tweaks can account for small changes, but not much (especially in Google).

You can do the work your self or hire a pro. Doing it your self may take longer, depending on your learning curve. If you decide to hire a pro, I would recommend working with someone who will tell you everything they are doing and who's focus will be on good link building (i.e., getting BOTH one-way and reciprical links from relevant sites). If an SEO is charging you monthly ($100s or $1,000s) and they are not improving your backlinks, they are not worth it, IMHO.

Personally, if you have the time and inclination, I'd recommend paying a pro to "audit" your on-page SEO and give you a written report with their findings and recommendations so that you can learn. Then I'de pay someone who specializes in link building. You will not need to spend your whole $5K per month on this, so you can compliment with PPC if that has a decent ROI for you or other advertizing.

I wouls take a long afternoon and research you competitors links. Find out of those site would link to yours also. Even if it cost 25-100 bucks here and there.

Or take a few days and create another wedding related page. Like a "Weddings from H*ll/Heaven" page. Invite people to submit some stories. Links from a site like that would boost your eCommerce wedding site.

If you want immediate results you may be able to generate those with PPC advertising. You may have to do some serious keyword research to find keyword phrases that are affordable for you.

I would certainly focus on inbound links not only as a way to improve your rankings in search engines but also to send you potential buyers.

Get some help and brainstorm ideas for related subjects. Search for sites about those subjects and contact those whose visitors could be interested in what you offer and offer to exchange reciprocal links.

Long term you'll want to improve your SEO. I suspect that you'll see the best results for your investment by hiring a small (possibly one person) SEO shop rather than a big company. I can ask the SEO I most respect for recommendations for you if you like.

Other ideas to increase income and traffic:

    1. Start a mailing list to which you send out a regular newsletter. The most successful online marketers bring their potential clients back to their sites by sending them information and offers of interest.

    2. Write articles targeting the highest traffic related keywords. Post them on your site for new search listings and link opportunities. Submit them to ezines too.

I had an experience recnely whicih changed the whole way in whicih i structured one of my e commerce sites.... i went community.

so now i (hope) i roll aloong with what google wants:

    new content daily
    lots of pages
    forums with lots of discusison

i havnt go that far with it...... yet. but i will , it is only a matter of time.

I would also review your whole marketing strategy ( if i got your situation right) and get advertising on google etc.

Ive decided to get into e bay using a seperate sub brand. im assuming you buy e-bay or not, so im expecting not that much crossover

and im going to froogle. the ratonale is simple. there is always a cost of distribution. SEO , advertising, discount. and so im spreading into as many channels as i can.

re the SEO as i said earler, perhaps its a case of re thinking the architecture of your site if its a static one.

Sites that really are worth linking to - will get linked to.
