I want to have a sight built, and am planning to outsource it to a company in india?, But havnt decided on one company yet. My question is., If they build my site, and write the programms needed to go with my site.

How do the turn the site back over to me, allowing me to operate the site seemlessly? Do they email me the site? Send it to me Via Fed ex on a harddrive? I just dont understand exactly how they can build a site for me, and then how do I take control of the site?, and Update the site without being able to programm?

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, But I just dont understand Out sourcing that well. I own about 50 sites that I have created with Dream Weaver., and I make an Ok living with them., Im just ready to move on to something much larger then small ad sense sites.

I guess they either install it on your server for you (make sure you change passwords once they are done), and then you have access to change stuff, or else they mail you a ZIP file, or even a CD, with all the files for you to upload to your own server yourself.

How to amend stuff? Depends on the type of site. If it uses a CMS then you log on just like you would do in a forum, and then simply edit stuff in your web browser. You need to clarify exactly what you want, and exactly what you are getting for your money.

    Ah, outsourcing

you need to determine if you want to work on a per project basis, or manpower basis.

Manpower basis is you pay a developer x to do x number of work hours per month. They will do what ever you need, but what you need may not be within their skill set, thus, you will pay for their "learning curve".

You must mmake sure that the programmer you get has the skills that you need. Also, very important, communication is difficult. Although they can read and write english, you will not be able to talk to many of them because of their thick accent. Look for an outsourcing company that has US project managers. They will communicate to the programmer for you.
Beware, they over sell their manhours, just like the airlines over book flights. Make sure that your dedicated programmer is only assigned to you.

Make sure you know how to spec a project and the use of visio and creating flow charts helps tremendously.

The other method is the per project method. You will submit an RFQ to the company and they will send you an estimate of hours and price. This is more expensive than manpower, but... in this arrangement you will get a team and each member of the team will specialize in the needed skills for completing the project. This way you are not restricted to the skills of the manpower or dedicated programmer. This is more costly but more effective..

Beware in all cases, most companies will only do EXACTLY what you spec, it is very rare to get feedback from them on better ways to complete your project. IF you spec it out wrong, what you get will be wrong.

India has a caste system, management cannot mix with workers socially, they cannot even ride the same train or bus to work. That lack of inter communication causes problems. Women traditionaly cannot offer any creativity or feedback to thier managers, they pretty much just have to do what they are told, although this is changing. Cultural issues arise no matter what country the outsourcer is in. SO..try to get a male programmer or team. There is nothing worse than having a development team that knows what your doing is incorrect and not being able to tell you. What a waste.

as for how the work is done. it is generally done on your host. if you don't tell them otherwise, they will do all the work on a live site. Have them work in a demo site on a subdomain or a subdirectory.

If they are doing custom work that you may want to own, you need to specify this in your agreements.

Do one small project before you commit to a long term agreement. If all goes will you have a new team, if it fails, your only out the money for the 1st project. Generally you can get started for less than 2K.

    Good companies to work with
    securenext.net
    tetrain.com
    dreamsoft infotech
    i-netsolution.com (i'm testing them now)
    y-brant

everyone's experience varies, remember, it's how you spec your project and communicate with the company that impacts your results.
