Does anyone have any information on the effect on search engines when you change the IP address on your sites. I have a dedicated server that hosts many of my sites on many different IP addresses. I now have the option to upgrade to a new dedicated server with my own DNS server. This new system will run all of my sites on one Physical IP address, and will allow me to create an unlimited number of virtual IP addresses. I'm wondering how this will affect my search engine ranking, of course most specifically Google. I'm obviously not very technically minded when it comes to web servers and hosting and in the past have go some great information from this forum.
Thanks for any help.

"virtual IP addresses"
No such thing. If there were, we wouldn't be running out of IP addresses. You can use a DNS server, to load balance to different machines. But if you are running one machine, than your web server is all you need to setup "virtual servers".
Either way, the engines will see the same IP on all domains and there isn't anything wrong with that.

Thanks unreviewed, One of the main bones of contention here is whether Google is using IP address at all, or are they only cataloging Domain Names. It would be great to get some info from you as to whether google will ban or penalize the one physical IP address or the offending sites Domain Name on the IP address.
Thanks again

And whether or not they us the IP address in order to cross check domain interlinking. While my sites certainly arent spammed duplicate content they do rely on eachother for much of there backlinks. Im a little worried about having all of my companies and sites on the same IP. And while it would be so much easier and cheaper to maintain. Is this worth taking the chance that google might connect the dots through some sort of automated spam filter

I don't know, however I can and will give my opinion based from my own experience.
Google will only ban individual domains, it must be this way because a great part of the web is now using virtual servers.. There have been cases where Google has banned an IP address, but they are rare cases and they were manual ban's, not from a spam filter. Those cases usually involved running link checking software and not spam.
However, if the websites are all crossed linked, it can get trickier. It will depend on the similarity of the content, and if the websites have strong inbound links. Keep in mind, that even separate IP's will not protect you if the websites are cross linked.
Most of the problems people experience has nothing to do with the IP issue. It is because the websites link to one another. Linking websites doesn't harm you, unless you are trying to run the exact same content from several different domains. And even "then" it just cancels out some pages, but doesn't result in a ban.
You really have to try very hard to get banned, and I have never seen it applied to an IP, except in rare circumstances mentioned above.
Page rank is based on pages. I can control my DNS, and I run 2 servers, each with a different IP from 2 different providers. I can change the DNS of my websites if one provider is down. I can do this instantly. The PR doesn't change when the IP changes.

once again excellent information, unreviewed. Its been a while since ive been back to these forums to post, they seemed to have got a little bogged down there for a while. The new site and system seems alot more organized and consise. I'm back to put my 2 cents into the pool. Thanks again for the info.

I know what you mean. But if you "think" this place has changed, you will be very please to know that more is on the way. Can't talk about it yet, but there are some interesting new ideas that are going to happen very soon.
