Let me get this straight,
1) Make sure my web site is search engine friendly
2) Make my Meta, title tags, with all the lil bells and whistles
3) Upload html
4) DONT submit and the search engines will spider me out and do the rest?

No to number 4. The engines will only find you if there are other web pages linking to your web site. You should seek inbound links from other web sites and directories. Ideally you would have some links pointing to your web site almost as soon as it goes live. Don't forget about local chambers of commerce and location specific portals that may list your web site i.e. say you live in Portland you may find a few links available from local resources.
All the best of the holidays to you and yours.

I'll add to Curious_Mark's post. You may already know this, but the quality of the links to your site are very important. You want to have sites link to you that have similar themes as what you have on your site. Also, see if you can find some directories that are focused on your industry.
Take a look in the forums. There is a wealth of information here.
Good luck,
Dave

There is no free lunch!
Cheap lunch, perhaps, if looking at uncompetitive searches, but not free.

I've always been guilty of number 4. I never submit to search engines (although I did recently submit to Teoma). I've always been the one to submit to directories and naturally let the SE's spider them. I should change that, especially for clients. It doesn't take more than a few minutes.

Submitting to the directories is always a great idea. Paul J, although I can't say this is always true, but it is often a faster way into an engines index from an inbound link of a site already in the engines index. You catch their natural crawl cycles this way which are given a great deal of the indexing resources.
The major search engines are blasted with spidering requests, I can't imagine the response times being acceptable often. If I had time within the clients budget, heck why not submit the home page once with the relevant engines. You submitting to directories pronto was very smart as it can take a significant amount of time to get reviewed by an editor.
If you do submissions on clients behalf, be selective with how you do so. Hand submission is best and possible. Some url blasting services are ineffective as they are blocked and can even be consider spam by some engines. Take a quick read of the FAQ the engines post geared to Web masters and site owners. If the engine does not like url submission services they will state so. You should of course make this part of your routine with all the major search engines.
Anybody else have any thoughts on this?
