    Hi,

Brand new here so excuse my obvious ignorance. But...

Can anyone tell me how, except for overture's keyword suggestion tool, I can see how many searches were performed (on any or all of the big engines) by particular keywords/phrases??

As far as overture goes, am I right in assuming that their tool will, for any specified keyword, count the number of searches on that keyword across their whole network?

Thanks in advance, excuse my ignorance!

Their tool is notoriously inaccurate, as far as estimating real world searches are concerned, due to:

    1. them combining plurals and mispellings into their count
    2. distortions caused by webmasters checking results for search terms

This does not mean their tool is useless - far from it. You just need to make an educated adjustment to the results to get a realistic idea, in most cases.

It is always best to cross check the results with a tool such as Word Tracker (which has it's own accuracy problems). You will need to make an educated adjustment to their results too, in most cases.

These tools are genrally most accurate for very highly used search terms eg mp3 and least accurate for search terms with low usage eg xylophone. Note that I said "generally". You will need to make an educated interpretation of the results.

Thanks OAC, that helps a lot.

Are the 'educated adjustments' that you mention based on your gut feel or is there something else at work with these?

I think I saw this link - http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/?keywords - here a week or so ago. It compares Wordtracker and Overture's search tool. The Wordtracker results come from their trial version, but it's still fun to look at.

At first glance, I thought that if the Overture search results were pretty even (rather than 3 times as much) with Wordtracker, the Overture results aren't inflated that much. I sure cannot back that up though. Any thoughts on this?

One thing that might help is to just think like the user. If the search term is something you think the actual end user would type, the Overture results probably aren't too inflated (although again, that's not cut in stone).
