Is BruceClay.com one of the best out there when it comes to web positioning?

Yes, Bruce Clay is one of the best ones out there. There are a lot of good ones out there and there are a lot of bad ones out there. You might also want to go to www.sempo.org to see other "good ones" too.

Actually, being a member of SEMPO is no guarantee of anything...if you pay them money, you can be a member. They have no criteria for membership other than the green criteria in your wallet.

Ahh hah.. but that is still no guarantee and there are many listed there that wouldn't pass my inspection - the answer really lies in your own education, become familar with techniques and especially techniques that are un-desirable. When choosing a marketing or SEO firm, it is always best to be ahead a little bit so that you can understand what is going to be done and if it is desirable. It is a case of not only "buyer beware" but also of "business owner's responsibility".
As a stakeholder in your own marketing you would want to become familiar with the media you wished to venture into.

There are several forum threads on several different forums about BC.
Use Google, to find them, and then read them all.
