Awhile back, someone brought to my attention to a concept called "crital mass" which was basically a concept where in order to achieve better rankings for single word keywords, a site must rank for alot of 2,3 and 4 word keyword terms which also contain the desired keyword. At some point you will reach a "critical mass" that allows you to build a solid foundation for moving up in the rankings for single and double keyword terms.
I'd like to know if there is a way to measure how many terms you need to rank for by looking at your competition? My hunch is that there is no way to know an absolute number, but that of course you will want to reach as many keyords and keyword phrases as possible.

schanginternet: Welcome to the forums, I know that "OAC" (a frequent poster here) has a page analyzer that's easy to use and pull's out the frequency of phrases. You could use that to see what the competition is using.

Hmm, we target a number of three and four word phrases and do very well in them for many different uncompetitive terms (results from hundreds to many hundreds of thousands).
However, a few days ago, I found out that the site is #2 in 8 million results for a two-word term that could be used by adult searchers (though the site isn't an adult site), so maybe you have something in your theory.

Anyone have any ideas and thoughts about this concept? It sounds pretty logical and concrete in my opinion. Thanks.

I'm sorry for the violation of the TOS. I didn't realize I was doing a no-no.
Anyway, yes I think this concept is interesting and it would seem to fit in with the concept of creating quality content will ultimately help you move to the top. I'm always hearing the "create quality content" and "lots of it", so maybe this is the big picture breakdown. Gotta get to the critical mass for your targeted keywords and variations thereof I guess. hmmm.

Very intersting article and idea -- I am not 100% sold though. I have ranked lots of clients for 2 word phrases right off.
Very recently however, it has gotten noticably harder for 2 word phrases, with 3 word phrases showing up all relatively easily.
There is a lot going on right now and it is difficult to seperate everything out -- good to keep in mind tho...
