I am new to websites and am just getting in to attempting to understanding optimization. There is something that is very confusing to me. On one had there seems to be a big emphasis on making sure keywords are in strategic places and balanced yet there is a strong emphasis on taking one keyword and finding a verity of words that spin off of it. For example on wordtracker or somewhere like that you might type in search engine and under that may come up search engine optimization. Ideally it would be nice to include all of these in text but if you do it seems like you might find yourself struggling to use them all, attempt to with in reason get them in the top, bottom and spindled in thought out the text and get them in the bottom of it Should I focus on what you might call root keywords and phrases that have the best results more often or include them with what you might call sub keywords and phrases for them less often or equally. I have text analysis software and the only time I get a good report is when I use a limited number of strong words more often (But not to often)
I want to emphasis that I realize this is only part of getting good ranking but I feel it needs to be taken care of before I move to the next step

I think you are confusing SEO (search engine optimization) and PPC (pay per click). They are both valid forms of online marketing.
When you optimize your site, your doing it to get free SE traffic. You should stick to 2-3 keyword frases per page, and atleast in the beggining, stick to keywords that don't have a millon people competing for them.
When you create PPC campaigns, you want to use as many keywords as posible. If you pay $0.5 a click for "buy widget" you may only pay $0.05 for purchase blue widget" and get the same sale, which is why a large amount of keywords are needed, for that type of marketing.
