    Hi,
I have built many sites and have noticed that a search for the exact name (domain name less the www and .com bit) always returns a result close to number 1.
IE. www.examplename.com will always rank high in a search for 'examplename'
Thats even with no other optimization tricks or meta tags or search term being used in the text or in titles or in ALT's bla bla bla .

So I figured on my next site, I actually define the domain name based on the prime keyword from doing some keyword analysis....
I did some research and have a list of keywords with good search stats, my problem is I now find that those domain names are all taken. (surprise!)

So, my question is if I register something like www.examplenameonline.com or even www.example-name-online.com
Will that be ranked high on a search for 'examplername' assuming there are no other optimization methods used for the time being.

Or is my logic not logical......?

I could answer this question myself with trial and error but im trying to avoid the expense of registering various domain names and waiting 6-12 months to see the results.

Thanks to anyone who can help.
    Dude.

While it is true that having keywords in your URL will help your rankings for those keywords, it is many times over-rated.

The reason xyz.com ranks high for the keyword xyz is not only because of the domain, but also because those sites tend to be well established, and have many back links.

So, my question is if I register something like www.examplenameonline.com or even www.example-name-online.com
Will that be ranked high on a search for 'examplername' assuming there are no other optimization methods used for the time being.

Yes, but that will only give you a small boost, it's no where near the key to success.

Thanks greenleaves for your response and advice.

Are you sure its over-rated though?
All the early sites I built which had no optimization at all and no backward links (before I became enlightened) have all popped into number 1 or 2 when searching on the exact url name !

This looked like a pretty big key to me, so what is the key then..?

    Thanks,
    Dude.

Having keywords in your domain will give you a boost, but, in my experience, nothing spectacular. The reason for your ranking on the exact domain keywords, can be due to many influences. First, how popular is the keyword. Another thing is how long the site has been in google, old sites tend to rank high, I would have to get to know the specific case you are talking about.

The key to success? Well I would have to say, research, hard work, testing, testing, and more testing. But I think you are looking for a more specific answer, as in the element google gives the heaviest value to (google analyzes hundreds of elements), and the answer to that would be links. Want to see? Do a search for medication in google. 15 million pages competing for the top spot. Site 3, rxlist.com, doesn't have the keyword anywhere on the page, only from incoming links. Medication.com doesn't even rank for their own keyword. Want to see for yourself? Create a page with any content, make up a keyword no one uses, and put link(s) from relatively high PR site(s) with the text of that unique keyword, (that’s not on the page you created). The page you created should rank for the keyword you invented. As far as other SEs, I really have lost touch with them, maybe someone else can help you with that.

Remember, to rank high, provide unique, valuable content, structure your site in a logical, easy to navigate way, both for the spiders as for humans, get links from related, high PR sites. All of which are a hell of alot harder said then done.
